Third and final semester students of the Foundation in Communication students of the Faculty of Communications, Media and Broadcasting (FCMB) were given the task of organising a showcase featuring Malacca and its many attractions in the Streets of Straits exhibition on 7 July.
Students in five groups produced collaborated pieces of eleven 4x4ft canvasses, that decked Courtyard 3 of Limkokwing University in a stretch of 40ft by 4ft; all linked to one another, creatively illustrating the highlights of Malacca using a variety of colours, textures and expressions as well as different types of mediums.
The exhibition also displayed other creative and innovative promotional items designed by students such as T-shirts, umbrellas, presentation boards and button badges, all on the theme of Malacca. The students’ work were then evaluated by the public via evaluation sheets handed out to attendees.
“They’re high in potential and they can definitely achieve wonders if they set their mind to it,” said program leader and creative studies lecturer Muhammad Husein.
“They managed to overcome obstacles and they’re very young with a lot to learn so given those circumstances and seeing as how this is their first exhibition, they did good,” he added.
Aseer Somejee of Pakistan, a final semester student who came up with a beautiful impression of the St Paul church, said “I’ve learnt a lot about accepting differences and understanding the perspective of others, through this coursework.”
His classmate, 19 year-old Zulaikha from Malaysia, who worked on a replica of the Chen Hoon Teng temple with her group members, said that The Streets of Straits was challenging, and that it triggered their creativity, as well as helped realise potentials they never thought they had.
She also felt that the overall semester drove them to appreciate Malacca in all its cultural glory, all the more.
Jash Sehgal from another group, liked how the exposure to history and culture that the Global Campus provided, allowed him to better understand the cultural diversity and unity of Malaysia, in general.
“The Global Campus was great as I learnt about how crucial the business entrepots are to forming relationships and I now understand the Malaysian culture better,” said the 17 year old from India.
Jonathan Nwachukwu, an Architecutre and Design student who visited the exhibition, said that it was good how students are challenged to recreate something similar to what they see.
“It’s amazing! What they’ve created makes us feel like we’re there even though we’re not and it does indeed feel like walking through the straits, in these 40 feet,” he said.
The exhibition was aimed at promoting Malacca as a state rich in culture and students were required to present and advertise their understandings and findings from their first hand experiences during their 5-day study trip to Malacca at the start of their semester.
