Monophone’s ‘High School Memories’ made its return on April 16 at the University’s Hall of Fame. Organised by the Merah Putih Club (MPC), Monophone 2016 featured ‘Changcutters’ as well as Indonesian cultural performances such as ‘Saman’ and ‘Kuda Lumping’.
The Changcutters are a rock-and-roll band from Bandung, Indonesia that has released four albums and received the 2009 AMI Award for Best Newcomers. Their musical style is a mix of rock, funk, punk revival, indie pop, jazz and blues.
Limkokwing University’s traditional dance team ‘Saman’, known for blending culture and advanced dance skills, made their return for Monophone 2016. The dance team is widely known throughout Malaysia and have been invited to perform at various Indonesian community events.
Monophone 2016 also introduced Kuda Lumping, a traditional and exotic dance originating from Java to students at the University. The performance depicts a group of horsemen riding colourfully decorated bamboo horses.
“Monophone is an annual cultural night of Merah Putih,” said Orista Primadewa, former MPC President. “We are delighted to introduce our culture to other students and strengthen friendships between different countries.”
Other highlights for Monophone 2016 included a fashion show, art exhibition and the inauguration of Merah Putih Club’s new President.
“The event shows what Indonesian music is like to students from other cultures,” said Fikri Muhammad Rahim, MPC’s newly elected as President.
“There are things that you cannot learn in classes,” he said. “The University provides students with the opportunity to communicate across different cultures.”
Limkokwing University offers students with the opportunity to experience diversity from 150 different countries. Students learn to develop networking skills with various nationalities to pursue a globalised career.
