The recent Red Bull Paper Wings World Championship held in Limkokwing University saw five students breaking records and heading to the Malaysian finals.

The Red Bull Paper Wings World Championship, started in 2012, is an international paper plane contest held in more than 85 countries around the world, and is aimed at university students.

For the 4th edition of this championship, Red Bull has approached Limkokwing University to be one of eight public and private universities in Malaysia as host to find the best three paper plane creators in the country.

The championship is simple: participants have to make a plain sheet of paper fly as far, as long or as artistically through the air as possible.  The act of making the paper fly incorporates the Red Bull brand traits of ‘flying’, ‘body’ and ‘mind’, and required the full use of the participants’ creative abilities to achieve the desired results.

The event which was hosted in Limkokwing University on 4 March 2015, saw five students successfully breaking records for both distance and airtime, which saw them getting a direct pass each to the finals on 22 March 2015 at Taylors University, where three overall winners will be chosen to represent Malaysia at the international finals in May at the stunning Hangar-7 building, in Salzburg, Austria.

Hamid Tabatabaei, an MBA in Project Management student from Iran, who is holding a strong record in long distance of twenty-one meters said, “When I came over to compete I wasn’t expecting to do this good. I was just here to have fun and enjoy myself with my friends. But after having thrown over twenty-meters I’ve discovered that I actually do have a talent! Nothing is impossible after all. I’m coming Austria!”

Murphy Xia Zhen, an English Programme student from China who is holding two big records in both distance and airtime said, “I believe in myself, I can do better and I can’t wait for the finals on 22 March.”

“The students of Limkokwing University are always up for the challenge. Most of them were willing to come and try in order to have fun. Overall we have had the strongest contenders from Limkokwing,” observed Red Bull representative Joelah Charles.

Joelah also said that the University was the right place to hold the event as, “the atmosphere here is different than other campuses, here students of the University are always open to new stuff.”
