Limkokwing University hosts Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2014

The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia will hold a special 2-day screening of this year’s best Short Film submissions at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s Cyberjaya campus on 20 and 21 October 2014.

22 of the highest quality worldwide works from 14 countries will be screened alongside a series of industry tech talks, workshop series and exhibitions. It would be the second time the festival is hosted by Limkokwing being the first Malaysian University to do so.

Each day would consist of 2 screening segments of 6 films (12 per day) duration 1-1.5 hours each. Workshops will be held by companies such as MAXON Computer (developer of Cinema 4D), Sony and Adobe on topics such as industry innovations, script writing and animation while industry talk will be by established film makers and writers.

Speaking at the press conference held in Limkokwing University to announce the festival, renowned scriptwriter and film analyst Yasu Tanaka said, “This screening will provide an opportunity for the Industry as well as students to be educated about fundamentals of academy-calibre films.”

The event is held to promote Limkokwing’s engagement with the global film industry, and to provide high calibre special events for the students of its Faculty of Film Communication and Broadcasting.

“Short Film is a medium for the future and it will definitely bring Malaysia to another level in this criterion,” said Dato Raja Aznil Raja Hashim, Senior Vice President of Limkokwing University.

The Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF) was established in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1999 in order to introduce Japan audiences to the world of short films. Since then it has taken 7 national tours with more than 140,000 audience members and also overseas in Los Angeles, Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia.

The festival is the only film festival in Japan recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an official qualifier of short films for Academy Awards nomination.

The list of films that will be shown during the festival:

1. In the Tree House – Tsuyoshi Nakakuki (20 min / Fiction)
A disparate and estranged family whose independent lives fail to cross paths. That is until one day they make a sudden, out of the ordinary trip.

2. Border Patrol – Peter Baumann (15 min / Fiction)
Young border cop Carl is anxious to finish work and watch the big football match against Austria but his plan is thwarted by the discovery of a suicide victim.

3. Lost Senses – Marcin Wasilewski (6 min / Animation)
A man is about to encounter a woman in an abstract flying city á la Giorgio De Chirico. But one unguarded moment is enough to make him lose his senses. And his chance.

4. Confession Ranking of Girlfriend – Shinichirou Ueda (20 min / Fiction)
One day, a man proposes to a woman. Instead of replying positively to the man who was hoping for a simple “Yes,” the woman reveals that she must confess 17 secrets. Can he accept all these confessions and propose to her once more?

5. The Queen of the Jubilee – Martin De Lange (11 min / Fiction)
There’s trouble down at the local bingo hall. Maud and Bertha, the most notorious old dears on the circuit, are about to clash for the big one - a £25,000 cash prize - and god help anyone who gets in their way.

6. Two Juliets of Verona – Ken Ochiai (15 min / Musical)
Verona Girls’ High School has been holding its legendary theatre festival for 120 years. Julie and Yuri are competing with each other to appear as the star of the play.

7. Cleaner – Sung-Chi Lo (23 min / Drama )
The proximity of two floors is close but they are worlds apart. What is considered to be a safe boundary for secrets is transcended by the perspective of a window cleaner, Ah-Biao.

8. Oh My Dog! – Chloe Alliez (6 min / Animation)
Somewhere near the hall of Brétigny-sur-Bizet in front of a raging crowd the most outstanding dogs face each other to put their talents and strengths to the test.

9. The Boy with a Camera for a Face – Spencer Brown (14 min / Fiction)
A coming of age tale about a boy born with a camera for a head that addresses the impossibility of both living life and documenting it.

10. Corner – Edward Khoo & Li Chen Kwok (3 min / Fiction)
Over his fourth cup of coffee, a security guard ruminates on a dream from the night before.

11. Rhino Full Throttle – Erik Schmitt (15 min / Fiction)
Bruno is making his way through the city searching for its soul. Driven by his curiosity, a challenging imagination and his wild reflection on reality, he is lifting the old dusty curtain on the city’s crusted perception.

12. Tokyo Symphony – Toshiro Sonoda (14 min / Fiction) 
Erika has graduated from music school where she studied conducting. One day, she meets an old man at the mansion where she is to audition. He is blind and explains to her that he wants to complete an unfinished symphony about Tokyo.

13. The Kid in the Closet – Yingxiu Shen (16 min / Fiction)
When five-year-old Dodo is taken to the city to live with his parents, he’s unwelcomed by his sister Lily and finds it hard to fit with the new environment. Gradually, Lily learns to become a caring sister to her little brother who’s illegal under the One Child Policy.

14. Lonely Bones – Rosto (10 min / Animation)
A hallucinatory film about creating dreams and making sacrifices.

15. Chicas Day – Susan Bejar (10 min / Fiction)
Today is a girls’ day out, everything is allowed… But don’t forget that this is just a game…

16. The Phone Call – Mat Kirkby (20 min / Fiction)
Heather is a shy lady who works at a helpline call centre. When she receives a phone call from a mystery man, she has no idea that the encounter will change her life forever.

17. Stroboscope – A.T (24 min / Fiction)
Nagayama is mistaken for the acclaimed director Shinohara and taken onto a tour bus to mentor the young creators on board. Meanwhile, the real Shinohara chases after them…

18. Mudita: Selfless Joy – Melvin Chan (9 min / Documentary)
Under the guise of wanting to learn about his mother’s newfound faith, director Melvin Chan must open up past wounds as he tries to reconnect with his mother.

19. A Lady Caddy Who Never Saw a Hole In One – Yosep Anggi Noen (14 min / Fiction)
A golf lesson, a love story, and a display of anger.

20. Collectors – Marcel Hobi (5min / Animation)
Whether it’s insects, antiques, autographs or adventures – collecting is a passion. You can never collected enough. A film about where collecting can lead.

21. Morepork – Miles Murphy (13 min / Fiction)
As the sun sets on a remote beach side village, the retired Mr. Wiseman is startled by the unexpected intrusion of a disheveled and potentially dangerous woman.

22. The Ringer – Chris Shepherd (17 min / Fiction)
A son is reunited with his long lost father for the first time. One would imagine it’s time for him to discover everything about where he’s come from and where he’s going. But he’s about to get a surprise…

The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia will be held at Limkokwing University’s Hall of Fame from 20 – 21 October 2014. The festival starts at 10.30 am on both day. Entrance is free and is open to the public.
