Living in Kuching
Kuching is the capital of Sarawak and the fourth largest city in Malaysia. In its bustling city centre, you will find gleaming modern shopping malls complemented by authentic, old-timey shops that reflect the charms of the city and its inhabitants. The atmosphere around town is generally laid-back and not as fast-paced as you would find in the nation's capital of Kuala Lumpur. But whether you're looking to shop, dine, party, hang out with friends or do a little sightseeing, there definitely won't be a lack of options.
Shopaholics can go crazy at The Spring and Boulevard—the two largest shopping malls in the state. Kuching has quite the nightlife as well with several pubs and bars dotting the city, with popular destinations that include the Riverbank Suites overlooking the Sarawak River as well as those located in the downtown area.
Both Malay and English are widely spoken though you can count on the locals to converse in their local dialects as well. Some of the local dialects heard can include Hokkien, Iban, Bidayuh, Mandarin, Foochow and many others.
Kuching has previously been ranked as the 11th Best City in Asia. Its dynamic and people-oriented society is caring and friendly with institutions and facilities that cater to the educational, spiritual and medical needs of the population. Strict codes of practice by local authorities ensure that Kuching will continue to be the city of choice for many, both locals and foreigners alike.
