Treasure Hunting on the Streets of London

We follow the FELDA Global Generation students as they went on a city-wide treasure hunt across London. This is the fourth part of our multi-part report on the FELDA Global Generation students’ activities in Limkokwing University’s Global Classroom initiative.

Although the weather was very chilly, the students were in high spirit and full of excitement as they waited for the hunt to begin. In twenty groups of five, the students were to find and decipher clues for a secret location scattered across the city of London. Each group were given an envelope with an instruction that contains the following parameters: a) the location had to be on either the Piccadilly or Victoria lines, b) students had only two hours to complete their task, c) the location had to be one of interest or intrigue.

Armed only with the clues and their cleverness, our FELDA students travelled across London to find their “treasure”: London’s rich history and diverse culture. With the task set, students ventured out on their mission with gusto.

The point of this exercise was to build communication skills, confidence, and a sense of adventure. As Limkokwing University values innovation, FELDA students have been encouraged to explore all areas of life; professional and academic, tangible and conceptual. The importance of learning life skills is paramount. Students learn how to take the bull by the horns and achieve things they never thought possible. To do this, confidence and self-belief are vital.

On receiving oral feedback from the students, tutors heard the problems they encountered and advised them how to overcome them in future. Even though the clues weren’t designed to be easy, they still had to be written in a clear, easy to read fashion. To understand the clues, the FELDA students worked as a team to read between the lines and find out what was being asked of them. The skills involved in such a task are as follows; clear communication, listening, problem-solving and, vitally, having the courage to give something a go even if they’re not sure of the results.

While out and about, students used the skills they have been building upon since arriving at Limkokwing London. Tutors actively encourage communication with the public; if you get lost, ask! Employing polite conversation skills learnt during their English lessons, FELDA students, at this stage, are now confident to approach a member of the public and ask for help.

Everyone was happily surprised with the results; almost all twenty teams found their treasure and completed their tasks. And the ones who didn’t? Well, they looked over the clues and reported that there had been a breakdown in communication and made suggestions as to what could be done differently in the future.
