The Limkokwing Sports and recreational clubs and societies unit was formally started in September 2008, at that time a few clubs were existing, and very active. Ever since then the unit has grown not only in numbers but has also implanted itself within the hearts of the students. The 7 clubs that existed when it started grew, and now they stand at 27 to date. The clubs are divided into three categories, Sports, Recreational and Societies:
All these clubs have been active in their own right throughout the last two years, although some have seemed to have faded and on the brink of dying a natural death, most have prospered and thrived through the hardships that they have encountered.
The Limkokwing Dance club is one of the active recreational clubs in the institution; they have been to 5 Dance meetings up to date (Lobatse, Francistown, Orapa, Jwaneng and Gaborone) at all these meetings they came back having taken almost all accolades that were up for grabs, they have won a total of 18 gold Medals, 6 Silver medals and 4 bronze medals at all the events. This led to our top couple Charles and Gorata to be chosen to represent the country at the regional dance championships in Lesotho, they came back with a gold medal at the event.
Bizzclub is one of the very active clubs in the institution and has held two big events which were equally successful; the Business Fashion Lifestyle and the Recession talk show. Bizzclub’s vision is to equip the young corporate minds of Tertiary institutions with significant, necessary skills, knowledge and competencies they need to survive in this very dynamic business climate. They have worked with African Alliance, Debswana, Mpho Khuane just to name a few.
The Wings Debate Club participated in the Pan-African Universities Debating Championships that was hosted by the University of Botswana main campus. The Pan-African Universities Debating championships brought together universities from 10 African countries. Participating universities came as far as West Africa,(Nigeria and Ghana), from East Africa (Uganda and Kenya) and from Southern Africa,(Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia). The tournament had about 25 universities participating. The event attracted over 300 debaters, adjudicators and about 12 trainers making it the biggest debating tournament ever in the African Continent. The intensive competition required each University team to take part in eight preliminary debates over six days. Out of a total of 8 rounds we are proud to say that our debate team only got knocked off in the fifth round while the University of Botswana got knocked off in the sixth round. The team also participated in the Private Tertiary Institution Games that were held this year on the 9th May 2009 at the Botswana College of Agriculture. It is at this event that our debate team proved to be competent in their game and ability as they emerged the 2009 debate winners.
The Karate team competed in the 2009 annual Itekanele Karate Championships, and walked away from the event with 16 medals, 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze, and the club administrator of the year award.
The theatre and Chess clubs participated in one event so far, they both didn’t do that well. As for the other clubs and societies they have their weekly meetings, workshops and crusades in the institution.
