The Republic of Botswana is a land-locked country dominated in geographical terms by the Kalahari Desert - a sand-filled basin averaging 1,100 metres above sea level. The country is the 47th largest country in the world and is neighboured by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia.
Botswana has three main ethnic groups which are the Tswana, Kalanga and the Bushmen with several smaller tribes. You will also be able to find white and Indian communities in the country. The country is predominantly Christian, with minority Muslim, Hindu, Baha'i and Badimo communities.
Botswana is well-known for its burgeoning tourism industry. Main attractions include its game reserves and national parks where tourists can sign up for hunting and photographic safaris. You also wouldn't want to miss the Okavango Delta region which originates in the uplands of Angola to the northwest, flows into Botswana and then spreads over the sandy spaces of the Kalahari. The Okavango is exceptionally pleasing on the eye during the rainy season when it is a maze of waterways, islands and lakes.
If you're looking to get your feel for Botswana's heritage, head over to the Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre in the village of D'Kar in the Ghanzi district where you can see local villagers and other Basarwa from nearby settlements sharing their heritage and culture with one another.
