On the 28 and 29 October, four Limkokwing University students from the Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting (FCMB) organised two games for the Revive Isotonic’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 challenge.

The two games, called ‘#Revfie’ and ‘Rev-Up Dance’, were the brainchild of mass-communication student Janet Chew Pei Pei. Janet then enlisted her friends to make up the rest of the team: Veronica Yap Hui Sim, Jason Chew Kuang Sheng and Kyo Kuan Chee Yang. 

Both games were based on the concept of marathon, but instead of the actual long distance running of the namesake, these games were a different kind of marathon indeed; #Revfie is a group selfie marathon that requires participants to search for items hidden around the university and snap a selfie with their found items, while Rev-Up Dance is a group dance marathon that requires participants to repeat the dance steps shown on a screen.

According to parent company Permanis Sandilands, Revive Isotonic’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme. Students from all backgrounds were encouraged to participate and Permanis Sandilands has an expert team to guide them throughout the Masters of Rev-up campaign.

“It is an opportunity for students to experience and execute an event on their own and managing all aspects of an event such as marketing, logistics, financing and human resources”, added Permanis Sandilands more.

Permanis Sandilands also said that this year’s Masters of Rev Up 2014, organised by its Revive Isotonic brand, had attracted more than 4000 entries from institutions of higher learning in the country. Out of these entries, 16 finalists were chosen for their best “Rev’d Up” ideas to compete in the grand finale.

Explaining the criteria used to choose the finalist, Permanis Sandilands explained, “The idea as a whole. We need to consider if it’s logical and appealing enough to be aligned with Revive Isotonic imagery based on the theme provided each year – and this year’s theme is ‘Rev-olutionising Marathon’ – where it could be a ‘run’ or a ‘continuous action’ of something such as a ‘movie marathon’ etc. Besides, we do evaluate line by line on their budgeting, marketing plans, logistics, human resources and timelines to see if this event is executable. On top of this, we also do evaluate the participants’ attitude during the audition stage which is also key to selecting the Top 16”.

The 16 finalists were sent to a boot camp and given RM5000 and 1,000 cans of REVIVE Isotonic per project. Each team has two months’ time to execute their project, and they will then be required to give a presentation at the finale on their project outcomes. Each team will be judged using the following criteria: project management, creativity, planning, budgeting and PR value.

Team leader Janet Chew said that for this year’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 challenge, she submitted three proposals, and out of the three, two proposals were shortlisted as the final 16. 

Janet also confided with us that she entered the Rev Up challenge as a way to prove herself. She remarked that although she’s currently doing mass communication, she has always been interested in doing event management. “To be in event management, it’s my dream. I want to get chance to see whether I can do it or cannot do it”. She also said that taking part in the challenge was very beneficial, and has helped increase her knowledge and experience in event management. 

Winner of this year’s Masters of Rev Up 2014 challenge will win RM 10,000 and a ‘Rev-up Zone’ make over in their University, complete with a foosball table. The winner also stands the chance to have an internship opportunity with Permanis Sandilands.
