On 11 July, Limkokwing University held its graduation ceremony for nearly 1200 students from 70 countries, the Class of 2015, at the Plenary Hall, Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
At this ceremony, the University conferred two Honorary Doctorates, to YBhg. Ar. Prof. Datuk Dr. Amer Hamzah Mohd Yunos and Pengiran Hajjah Fatimah bte Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin, in recognition of their outstanding contributions in their respective fields.
YBhg. Ar. Prof. Datuk Dr. Amer Hamzah Mohd Yunos, President of Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM), was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Leadership in Architecture. Pengiran Hajjah Fatimah bte Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Graduate Studies College of Brunei Darussalam, was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Leadership in Education.
This year’s graduation theme was ‘Empowered to Make the Impossible Possible’. These inspirational words come from the Founder and President of Limkokwing University himself, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Lim Kok Wing. The theme defines the calibre and mindset of the University’s graduates, which are young people with a global outlook and are trained in the use of new media technology.
In his commencement address, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Cedric Bell congratulated the students and told them that the graduation was the culmination of a long and challenging but ultimately rewarding journey.
“You have studied in a unique globalised ecosystem where talent and creativity is nurtured and you have become empowered with the skills and attributes you need to be the next generation of global leaders who can make the impossible possible.”
Prof. Bell then reminded the graduates that, “You are empowered to be leaders not followers.”
Graduate speaker, Chong You Leong from Malaysia, said his six years at Limkokwing, from his foundation year and until he graduated with his Architecture degree, has greatly empowered him to great height that he would never have achieved anywhere else.
You Leong said he had won numerous architecture awards while still a student. “I was given a chance to lead a 10-member team and won for the best booth in the annual architecture student exhibition for three times consecutively.” Chong You Leong is the current President of the Limkokwing Architecture Student Council, and will be in charge of the upcoming 27th PAM Annual Architecture Student Workshop that will be held in October 2015 in Limkokwing University.
Another graduate speaker Bobur Umurzakov from Uzbekistan thanked the University for all the experience and opportunities he’d been given, and for giving students like him a place to find their true self. Born in Uzbekistan but grew up in Dallas, Texas (USA) in a mixed Eastern - Western family, meant that he was constantly having trouble mixing in. But when he enrolled in Limkokwing University, he found his home, a place where he belongs.
“Ever since the first time that I crossed the doorstep of Limkokwing University, up until today, I’m truly fascinated by all of the amazing people coming from different background, bringing along not only their unique culture and personality, but also their aspirations and desires. Here I found out that people were just like me, looking for their better self, and constantly trying something new.”
The graduation ceremony saw a total of 1153 students, which included students from Limkokwing’s campuses in Kuching and the United Kingdom, receiving their awards from the Chancellor of Limkokwing University, Her Royal Highness Sultanah Pahang Sultanah Dr. Hajjah Kalsom.
