Talented Limkokwing alumnus Kirstie Maximus, a recording artist and DJ, shared her unconventional journey during a talk in the University's Creativity Series in early April. With candour and passion, she recalled how music captivated her from a young age, even as she navigated expectations for a traditional career path.

“I’ve always been very musically influenced, and music is just something that I love doing since I was young till now,” Kirstie stated. Hailing from an Indian background where traditional careers were expected, Kirstie cleverly tricked her parents into thinking she was pursuing a career as a sound engineer. This pivotal moment paved the way for her true passion. This passion for music drove her to explore various avenues, including songwriting, producing, deejaying, and performing her music.

Kirstie’s time at Limkokwing University’s Sound and Music Technology Academy shaped her artistry. “I learned a lot doing the Limkokwing Sound and Music Technology course that I did. It was more hands-on here, a lot more practical than it is theory,” she said. The hands-on, practical approach provided her invaluable live sound, music production, and software utilisation skills, laying the foundation for her future endeavours.

When asked about the essential qualities for success in the music industry, Kirstie emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and persevering through challenges. “You can’t let the negativity bring you down,” she advised. “Positivity and perseverance ultimately is the key to success.”

As her journey unfolded, Kirstie faced numerous challenges, including stereotypes and preconceived notions about female artists in the industry. “People always have an idea of what a female artist or a female DJ should look like, and I don’t necessarily fit into that category,” she admitted. However, her resilience and unwavering confidence allowed her to break through these barriers, inviting audiences to experience her unique artistry firsthand. By inviting sceptics to her shows, she has successfully challenged and changed their perceptions.

To stay motivated and inspired, Kirstie looks up to established artists who have paved the way for others. She particularly admires Michael Jackson for his perfectionism and attention to detail, traits she strives to emulate in her work. Kirstie’s approach to nurturing creativity and innovation in the music industry is rooted in mindfulness and attention to detail. “Inspiration is always in the air. It’s about what we hear and see,” she explained. She encouraged aspiring artists to capture their inspired moments by writing them down or recording them, ensuring no idea is lost.

For students and aspiring artists looking to make a lasting impact in the music industry, Kirstie’s advice was clear: “You need to have your own catalogue, your own style, your own sound, and most importantly your own music.” She emphasised the importance of being a creator and having a unique identity as an artist.

Kirstie’s genuine delivery and practical advice inspired students to forge their creative paths, just as she had. Her journey exemplified how passion, perseverance, and a willingness to defy conventions can shape an extraordinary artistic career.
