Limkokwing University's final year students showcased 'Blue', a 3D multiplayer shooter game set in a submerged post-apocalyptic world, to industry experts.

The gaming industry is currently seen as a developing contributor towards the country’s economy. Creating a game requires the collaboration of a diversity field from visual and audio design, programming, project management, creativity and innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.

Recognising this fact, Limkokwing University recently organised a Games Showcase Exhibition and Industry Review event for the final year students. It was a celebration of presenting finishing semester projects by a group of talented students which was attended by many industry experts.

One such project was ‘Blue’, a collaborative final semester project by 15 students from both the faculties of Information & Communication Technology and Multimedia Creativity.

Project leader Lim Gieng Fung explained that the project aim was to deliver an immersive and entertaining experience to the consumers.  Developed using the UDK engine, Blue is a 3D multiplayer shooter game that let players roam a harsh and dire post-apocalyptic world where the earth is submerged. Blue’s gameplay is based on submersibles charged with its weapons ready to battle and waiting to be rescued. This combat game has two teams of players against each other, representing the two factions in the game comprising the governing faction ‘Pan Pacific Mining Corporation (PPMC)’ and the rebel faction ‘Scylla’. Both teams must compete with each other to harvest large amount of resources known as ‘Scrap’ from sunken satellites.

Asked on the team’s challenges during the completion of the Blue project, Lim said, “Being a large group we had lots of conflict among us but we managed to resolve it. Another challenge I would say was the time management as the team was facing time constraint due to other classes’ projects.”

“The team was divided into two namely the core team and the secondary team. The core team had their full time occupied into this project. Our lecturers were very helpful even during the weekends, without them the team wouldn’t have succeed so far,” added Lim.

Senior Lecturer Mr. Jeremy Foo, who also acts as the project advisor, said that he was honoured to have been able to witness the development process since day one. As Mr Choo explained, “video games are a unique type of medium. Some consider them as mere entertainment, some consider them as a form of art. Others see it as a complete waste of time. Whichever way you choose to see it, it is undeniable that video games have a lot potential.” He hoped that the production of the game would inspire and encourage more young creative thinkers to walk the same path in creating more amazing world of ideas and innovation.
