Limkokwing students perform on-stage for their final project

Limkokwing’s Sound and Music Technology and Performing Arts students teamed up in a live on-stage performance for their final assessment on Dec 1st at Limkokwing University’s Plaza.

Sound and Music Design Academy (SMDA) lecturers, Mr. Aiman Mohd. Misri and Mr. Muhammad Razin Abd. Shukor, who taught the Live Sound and Vocal Techniques modules respectively, were on hand to guide the students to set up the stage from the ground up for the live performance.

Divided into groups of three or four, the Sound and Music Technology students prepared the sound system as the Performing Arts students took the stage to exhibit their talent in singing or playing musical instruments.

The students were graded individually based on their courses: the Sound and Music Technology students were graded according to their ability to set up the sound system and the quality of sound produced, while the Performing Arts students were graded for their individual performances on stage.

According to Mr. Aiman, as most of the modules taught in the courses are industry-based, practical assessments will help the students to apply the theories they learned in the classroom.

“A lot of the students’ character to become an engineer is shaped here because it demands them to be creative and to improvise the technical problems on the spot, based on the theories and the technical knowledge that they have learned in class,” added Aiman.

Mr. Muhammad Razin explained that the vocal techniques module is a must for students to gain experience and exposure that will enable them to appreciate music more. He also stressed that it is important for professionals in the industry to learn the fundamentals of music.

Pan Jo-Vi, a Diploma in Sound & Music Technology student, who plays and records occasionally with a band, agreed that this fundamental practical knowledge is essential and can come handy at critical times.

“When we are performing out there, we need the knowledge of Live Sound. We need to know how the cable works, how the patching goes, and yeah, if there is no engineer, I can do it as well.”

The hands-on experience and practical work given to the students are aimed at providing them with the knowledge and exposure to encourage multi-tasking and working in teams.

The students taking part in today’s performance enjoyed the practical approach used by the lecturers in teaching and assessing them.

Hanna Syahirah Ahmad Zahar, a classmate of Pan Jo-Vi, said that she found the lecturers to be very open and helpful. “Before this I didn’t know anything about music, and now I know what to do with everything already,” added Hanna more.
