Egyptian student Lobna Hasan Ali Hassan Elgheriani enjoys travelling around the world and learning new things. Her love for architectural design brought her to Limkokwing University to study under the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.
Seeing Designs Come to Life
Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Architectural Studies) degree and now studying Masters of Architecture, she describes architectural studies as a mix between science and art.
According to Lobna, being able to draw her designs on a piece of paper and witnessing it come to completion is very satisfying.
“The reason why I did architecture is because I enjoy seeing a design on paper being brought to life,” she said. “It was amazing to be able to see people live (in the spaces I have designed).”
Real World Exposure
Industry exposure helps Limkokwing students to learn both the practical and theoretical side of architecture.
“We worked with various organisations, both private and government, talked to professionals and conducted investigative case studies. Apart from that, we made site visits such as the historical city of Melaka to explore the colonial architectural styles.”
The exposure enabled her to gain valuable experiences which helped her to familiarise herself with industry practises.
“I got to know that my standards were really higher than what was expected when I conducted my first internship in Egypt,” she said. “The people there could not believe that I was just in my third semester.”
Greatest Personal Achievement
Lobna believes her greatest achievement was suggesting the idea of a Limkokwing University Cultural Festival.
“When I first came to Limkokwing University, I observed that each country celebrated their Independence Day individually.”
She was fascinated by the University’s multicultural environment and that was when she came up with an idea.
After witnessing several celebrations, she wanted to create a festival whereby students from different countries could share their cultures together.
“I drafted the proposal and it was approved,” she said. “It was launched after one year and that was the greatest achievement of my life. Everyone was so happy to share their culture, and every country was able to share their cultural identity.”
Promoting Harmony
Being able to see everyone celebrating diversity in peace is indeed important for Lobna.
During her studies, she became a host of her own show at Wings Radio for more than a year. The programme, called ‘As the World Spins,’ features various cultures and events around the world. It focused on creating greater understanding between different cultures and traditions in an entertaining manner.
“I like to try out different things and learn things quickly,” she added. “At the same time, I also like to plan activities and volunteer at various events and organisations.”
