Vimal Kumar Selvam: Seasoned Actor

Vimal Kumar Selvam, a Limkokwing University alumnus in Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Professional Design (Visual Communication) was catapulted into stardom in 2013 when he launched his acting career.

To date he has starred in five movies and one music video namely: Kisah Cinta 2, BIB, Bercinta, Thedal (Music Video), Homestay Berhantu and Maatikitten Meena under Singapore based Zeel and Mtzender Production companies.

We had a chance to chat with the seasoned actor to learn ropes around his career:

“I discovered my passion for acting when I joined in Limkokwing University at 19 years old, that’s when I got the chance to try out my skills and followed through with it. I used to watch a lot of films and always had a drive to try something new that’s how I got my inspiration.”

“It’s funny because when I was younger I wanted to be a Formula 1 racer. I became the champion for Formula 1 simulator in Malaysia at 20 years old. All these opportunities opened after I joined Limkokwing University; it was a perfect time. Along with every other career path I wanted to explore, Piloting was one of my main interests. But after a long discussion with my parents I opted out.

I joined Limkokwing in 2010, on why I joined, I also had a passion for drawing and so I searched for the best University to study Professional Design and there was none other university for me to study this than Limkokwing University; it’s the best. Making the choice to study here was even simpler because my brother studied in Limkokwing as well so all I heard from him was positive feedback.

I had a wonderful experience studying at Limkokwing University; I learnt a lot of things and my skills improved immensely. I also had the opportunity to be a student ambassador for Malaysia, that’s when I got to really learn in depth about other cultures because I made friends from all over the world.

Overall my experiences at Limkokwing University are invaluable, as a student ambassador I took part in a lot of initiatives that give back to the community for example, ‘Heal the World’ which is spearheaded by students to raise awareness about urgent global concerns.

So far it has contributed to aiding countries like the Phillippines after Hurricane Typhoon, Palestine and Haiti. Being part of such meaningful events and initiatives changes ones perspective about life, for that I am grateful to Limkokwing University.

I graduated in December 2014 and after that I focused on acting. I have now acted in about six tele-movies and dramas.

The main challenge I faced was on the early stages of my career, I always got cold feet during auditions. It used to take four or five breaks to finally get it right. But I couldn’t let this fear hinder what I aspire to be so I had to kick it to the curb, besides after studying in Limkokwing University my confidence grew to heights.

In my experience, to be a successful actor one has to be very humble, no matter how famous you are. It gets you a long way. If you aspire to be successful, it is within you to channel your talents, don’t hesitate, be yourself and just go for it. If you are a shy person, fake it until you make it.

I am currently working on a new project; a Tamil telemovie named ‘Unnai’, 10 years from now I would like to see myself on the international scene, and I would work hard to reach that level. I know there are challenges along the way, they are inevitable, but perseverance is everything.”
