Celebrating an inspiring year of transformational creativity

Celebrating an inspiring year of transformational creativity

A metamorphosis is taking place within the confines of the Limkokwing University in Maseru. Over 1,000 Basotho will emerge in two years time from the cocoon that is building their skills in digital technology and awakening their creative thinking abilities. They will graduate with the competency to create content, dipping into the rich resource of Lesotho's heritage to provide new perspectives for wealth generation and issues management. Lesotho will soon have at its disposal new talent with skills to enable the country to venture into unexplored economic territory.

Exciting possibilities loom in the horizon

Lesotho must now prepare the ground for the arrival of these new thinkers as they will require the digital infrastructure to boost their new abilities. They will strengthen Lesotho's global presence using new media technology to help position the country more effectively in areas such as tourism, publishing, broadcasting and in drawing foreign exchange through fields such as Shared Services and Outsourcing.

"For the first time in the history of our education system, we are now part of an information and communications technology global classroom. I am very glad to learn that students at this university can access learning resources virtually across the Limkokwing campuses on the three continents of Africa, Europe and Asia.

The most important resource this country has in abundance is its people, Basotho children. It is only through relevant education that we can ensure that this human resource is nurtured and prepared for developing our country. An appropriately educated nation will present our country as a magnet for investors. Information and communications technology companies, will, for example, find it easier to set up assembly plants in Lesotho if we are able to prove that this university has churned out enough skilled technologists.

I want to tell parents that right here in Maseru we have an institution that measures up to the best in the entire world.

Another aspect is the creativity and innovation which is contained in the courses the university offers. Lesotho has a lot of talent which remains untapped and unrecognized. It is my view that these courses will unlock this potential and lead to the growth of a vibrant small and medium enterprise industry that will expand employment opportunities and uplift the living standards of many Basotho.

Furthermore, it is our hope that this new institution, with its novel approaches to teaching and learning, will not only be a source of motivation for its students and staff, but will also have a positive influence on other tertiary institutions which have, hitherto, maintained conventional methods.

For a long time, we have wanted to shake up the higher education system of our country. It is our firm belief that the establishment of this institution is seen as a catalyst that will enable us to achieve this objective.

Indeed, Lesotho will never be the same again."

On track to strengthening human capital of Lesotho

One year has passed since Limkokwing University established itself in Maseru with the grand mission of developing a new generation of human capital equipped with the skills of new technology and creative thinking capabilities. I am very encouraged by the progress the University has been making in moulding our young citizens to become the force that we want them to be in moving Lesotho into new economic directions.

This Government has placed high hopes upon the shoulders of our youth. We look to them to transfer the responsibility of looking after Lesotho. In their minds lies the future of Lesotho. Therefore they must be imbued with the right skills, the right attitude and the right knowledge to take on the enormous challenges that our country faces.

Limkokwing University Lesotho has provided the 21st century learning environment to develop this corps of intelligent, creative and techno-savvy Basotho graduates.

And I am very certain that soon the country will receive the boost it needs when these skilled and creative Basotho graduate. We sorely need their skills and knowledge to take Lesotho's economy to the next level.

It is time the world saw Lesotho in a new light. Limkokwing University Lesotho is our investment in the future where our youths, empowered with the right skills, knowledge and attitude will lead Africa to greater integration with the global economy.

Congratulations on your first anniversary in Maseru.

Empowering, enriching, enabling Basotho with 21st century technology

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho

Limkokwing students will graduate with skills in the use of new media technology. Here they enjoy the facilities of the e-library at the campus in Maseru.

The Limkokwing University has always been focused on technology since its inception over 18 years ago because technology plays such a defining role in the lives of individuals employed in government, industry and organisations. We ensure our students are exposed to the best multimedia software used by industry.

Laptop Empowerment Initiative – designed to engage Basotho in the use of new media technology

We work with global IT giants like Acer, Microsoft, Dell, Apple and Hewlett Packard to expedite technology-transfer to make the Univer-sity the most hi-tech campus in the country. Since the Laptop Empowerment Programme was introduced a year ago our students have become more computer-competent and make maximum use of the technology for research and multimedia applications.

Expediting the growth of creative industries

Our programmes are strategic to producing a new class of graduates with skills and knowledge needed to achieve the aspirations of Vision 2020. These are programmes that are not available in any of the existing institutions currently in operation in Lesotho. The programmes that we provide are aimed at fuelling the growth of creative industries by building skilled manpower to encourage Lesotho's economy to diversify into technology-intensive areas connected to new media.

Spin-off entrepreneurial activities

The knowledge-transfer, skills-transfer and technology-transfer are intangible benefits that have helped to build talent. In setting up campuses we have also provided avenues for Basotho companies to gain from spin-off activities related to property development, transport, security, F&B and other infrastructure-related development.

Creating digital whizkids Achieving Vision 2020

Economic advantage no longer depends on natural resources, raw materials, trade of goods and services and giant factories. Instead innovative human resource is the force now driving the new economy and regenerating the old economy.

It is innovation that divides the world. It is a divide between countries with the capacity to innovate and those simply without. Now advanced nations are pulling away to higher levels while the developing world continues to struggle just to keep pace. This has resulted in a profound shift in the nature of global competition.

At the cutting edge of this shift is the creative sector of the economy – science and technology, software engineering and web-publishing, digital media and design innovation, culture and entertainment and the knowledge-based professions.

Because these industries rely heavily on talent advanced economies around the world have stepped up their efforts to attract the best thinkers and doers, the brightest scholars and entrepreneurs. Many of the brightest brains from the poorest countries sent to the advanced countries to further their education, do not return home and are lost to the rich countries. There are reportedly more African scientists and engineers working in the United States than in the entire African continent.

The result of this brain drain is widening disparity between the developing and the developed countries in talents essential to develop economies and expand industries.

At this University we are creating a new generation that will provide the drive Lesotho needs to fulfill its aspirations defined in Vision 2020 and provide the basis to engage productively in building an innovation-focused economy.

Empowering Basotho to be outcome-driven and innovative

The Limkokwing University has been in Maseru for over a year now and I am pleased to report that this university has begun that process by creating the most hi-tech learning environment to empower students with the latest in digital technology.

Our primary objective here is to assist in the social and economic transformation of Lesotho. Lesotho's Vision 2020 has a broad agenda to lift the nation to new levels where every Mosotho becomes an active participant in the rebuilding of Lesotho.

We believe the nation's solutions lie in the empowerment of its young people to think creatively so they may be outcome-driven and innovative in mindset.

Here at this university every student uses the latest in digital software as a vital part of learning. Every student uses the latest technology to create content. Every student has access to our electronic library to conduct research on a global level.

Every student will understand the value of leading a healthy life; that a healthy lifestyle is part of being an empowered person.

To our students, let me say how pleased we are that you have come on board. In joining us you are now part of a globalised university. You are now part of a student community of more than 150 countries.

You will learn new skills in the use of new technology which in turn will empower you with new knowledge. You will empower yourself to be the most dynamic, enterprising young people this country has ever seen. You will discover that you have more creative talents than you have ever imagined.

You will be the generation that will change the way people think and bring about changes that will set the pace of progress in this country. You will become a driving force of this country's transformation.

Those who choose not to do ordinary things are always the ones to achieve extraordinary success.

This is my advice to you, whenever challenged, no matter how difficult and how much it has taken out of you, stay on the track. Stay the course. Stay on till it is done. Stay on and it will be done.

Lesotho can now look forward to witness the transformation of Basotho into digital whizkids, who bring a promise of new developments for the country. The world is moving in such a rapid pace that the country needs the services of young blood well-prepared to tackle the challenges of this new era where digital skills and the ability to think creatively are paramount to progressing Lesotho to the next level.

The future is now in your hands.
