Limkokwing students took part in the MIID Dulux Interior Design Students’ Saturday 2016 on 8 Oct to compete with 19 other universities to showcase their talents in interior designing.
This year’s event was themed ‘IDMOJI’, which represents ideas, interior design and emotions.
The workshop competition was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) and hosted by Erican College Kuala Lumpur. MIID is the national institute representing the interior design profession in Malaysia. The institute conducts various programmes throughout the year to educate, promote and foster better ties between the public and its professional members.
Students from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment brought home three awards: 2nd Place for Sketching (Storyboard), 2nd Place for Essay Writing and 3rd Place for DBKL Dustbin Recreation.
The competition was separated into 10 categories: Dustbin Recreation, Timber Pallet (Signage), Furniture Design, Sketch Design, Essay Competition, Masquerade Performance, Fashion (Costume Design), Shelter Design, Game (Emoji Hunt) and Game (Emojinary).
The workshop aims to improve the quality of interior designers by fostering professional and creative development among students. This exposure enables students to enhance their skills while learning from other students and industry professionals. These include communication, presentation, teamwork and critical thinking skills.
“The exposure allows students to think out of the box and learn the importance of teamwork,” said Brian Daniel a/l Ganapragasam, Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture. “You get to work with different people while developing your communication and presentation skills.”
At the same time, students learn from experience by seeing how other students perform and develop their own abilities.
“We get to know much more than being in a class,” said Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture Soule Teh Su Lian. “We learn by practising real-life concepts and presentation.”
She also explains that the workshop enables students like her with the chance to learn from her peers while gaining more insights from experienced professionals.
“By involving students and professionals in this workshop, they can learn from each other,” added Faculty of Architecture and The Built Environment tutor Bethusile Sakhiseni Tibana. “It helps the students by engaging them in these activities and allowing them to discover their own strength and weaknesses.”
Limkokwing University encourages participation in events, workshops and competition as part of the University’s industry-exposed learning approach. This promotes networking opportunities and multicultural awareness among the University’s graduates, preparing them to compete in a globalised environment.
