There’s an awesome new attraction at the Pavilion shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, but you have to head there soon or you might miss it!

A massive and intricate kolam is on display at the centre court of the mall, and it’s certainly a head-turner.

The “Unity Kolam” was designed and brought to life by some 100 international students from Limkokwing University, from 18 countries including Venezuela, Brazil and Maldives.

The kolam design features the elephant, peacock and lotus, symbolizing power, beauty and health.

At the unveiling of the kolam in a grand lighting ceremony on 11 October 2017, Pavilion KL’s Director of Marketing, Kung Suan Ai, applauded the students for putting together a grand showcase for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations.

“Every year Pavilion KL partners with educational institutions and this year we are very pleased to have Limkokwing University to join us.  We are in the business of also connecting with the talent of the industry, today is a showcase of the creative work that is put together harmoniously by the students both local and international. When they are witnessed by people it brings a sense of Unity and belonging and a sense that we are harmoniously together in an effort.”

Other notable guests in attendance at the unveiling were Dato Joyce Yap, CEO of Pavilion KL; Dato’ Gail Phung, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Worldwide, and Yun Wen Lai, General Manager, General Manager Pavilion KL.

The kolam is a traditional Indian form of sand-painting using coloured grains of rice or powder, with the most complex designs created during festivities and special events.

Clad in their cultural regalia, students from the University’s Indian Cultural club and Magic dance club serenaded spectators with energetic and cultural dances.

One of the student performers, Paavignessrao Chandarh Roo who is studying for a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Information Technology, expressed his delight at having the opportunity to showcase his culture to an international audience.

“I really would like to thank Limkokwing University and Pavilion for giving us this opportunity to celebrate and showcase our culture. We hope we shed light to everyone who attended this event,” Paavignessrao said.
