In accordance with October as the breast cancer awareness month, Limkokwing University held an awareness day in support of those dealing with breast cancer and their families.
The event was held at the University campus on the 31st Oct and was attended by Ministry of Health representative, Deputy Director of Health Services, Mrs. Rejoice Nkhambule and representatives of the Swaziland Breast & Cervical Cancer Network (SBCCN).
The event, which was themed ‘Celebrating Life with Hlengiwe: Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ was closer to home for the Limkokwing community as they showed their support to one of their own, Hlengiwe Kunene, a first year International Tourism student.
Hlengiwe is the youngest female in the Swaziland to be affected by breast cancer, and she is currently undergoing chemotherapy in Nelspruit, South Africa. Alongside providing moral support and encouragement, the event also aimed at raising donations towards her medical expenses.
One of the SBCCN representatives, Nokuthula Khumalo educated the audience on breast cancer early detection, sign and symptoms, self-examination methods and steps to take if you are showing breast cancer symptoms. Another SBCCN representative and breast cancer survivor, Zinhle Ndzinisa gave her emotional testimony of dealing with the disease, and encouraged Hlengiwe to be strong.
Pink candles were lit as a sign of hope for those living with cancer, and the Limkokwing Tenors, the University choir sang encouragement songs for the cancer fighters and survivors.
