Lord Sheikh of Cornhill in the City of London

He has employed the virtues of perseverance, discipline and optimism to pave his way from penniless status to a peerage in the United Kingdom's House of Lords.

The journey may have been long and taxing but to Lord Sheikh of Cornhill in the City of London, he would not have exchanged it for any other, not even for the riches left behind by his family in Uganda when they were exiled by General Idi Amin, so many year ago in 1972.

Man of talent, innovative and outcome-driven

An Indian by race, Kenyan by birth, Ugandan in exile and British by choice, he has spent his youth building his skills in financial management and found his calling in insurance and financial services within which he has carved a formidable career. He is a linguist, able to converse in six languages which include several African and Asian languages.

Lord Sheikh of Cornhill in the City of London came to the UK in 1962 to work for Sun Alliance as a section manager and studied for Chartered Insurance Institute qualifications. He attended the City of London College and Holborn College where he completed the Associateship of The Chartered Insurance Institute and subsequently passed the Fellowship of The Chartered Insurance Institute. In 1978 he became Chief Executive and Chairman of IFA firm and insurance broker Camberford Law.

When Lord Sheikh took over Camberford Law, it was a highstreet broking organization. However under his stewardship, within the space of three years it became a Lloyd's broker and now provides risk facilities for 1,800 brokers.

Man of charity and benevolence, making historical footprints

In 2006 Lord Sheikh created history by becoming the first Muslim to be appointed to a peerage by the governing Conservative Party. He uses his elevated status to address social gaps and build awareness of issues related to human trafficking, forced marriages and identity theft.

While his passion lies in working with children, he feels compelled to correct the increasing misrepresentation of Muslims in politics, media and society in general.

As a Muslim Tory peer he feels he has additional social responsibility to do all that he can to help people see the huge numbers of bright successful Muslims in all spheres of British society instead of focusing on an extreme minority.

He is Chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum as well as the Conservative Ethnic Diversity Council. He also holds the following positions in Parliamentary groups:

  • Vice Chairman, Conservative Parliamentary Friends of Pakistan
  • Vice Chairman, British-Bangladesh All-Party Parliamentary Group
  • Vice Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Group of Saudi Arabia
  • Vice Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Group of Central Asia
  • Vice Chairman, Associate Parliamentary Group on Islamic Finance
  • Member of Executive of Conservative Parliamentary Friends of India
