The Tourism Management program of ARU is designed to prepare graduates for an exciting marketing or management career in this growing industry. Graduates of the Anglia Ruskin University BA (Hons) in Tourism Management can expect to have opportunities in varied sectors under the industry including:

Hotels & Resort Management, Contract catering, Consultancy, Management of a bar, Restaurant Management or Fast-food Outlet, Radio or TV host for Tourism and Hospitality Programmes, Armed Forces Catering Sector Management, Amusement Park, Casino, Catering/Convention, Destination Manage-ment, Spa Management and Travel Agency.

When you graduate you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the tourism and leisure industry - its products, its customers and the environment within which they interact.
  • Display a real insight into the cultural significance of tourism.
  • Show an appreciation of the development and growth of knowledge of tourism.

On a more practical level, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate individual tourism markets and analyse strategic behaviour within those markets.
  • Show an appreciation of contemporary global issues and how they relate to the tourism and leisure industry.
  • Plan and execute research projects.
  • Effectively communicate results at whatever level is appropriate to the audience.

This course is not just about developing an understanding of tourism and leisure. A strong vocational focus makes it ideal preparation for a successful career within this exciting industry.

Entry Requirements

  • Pass STPM/ A Level with minimum 3 principals; OR
  • Pass Foundation/Pre-University/Matriculation in related field; OR
  • Pass SM3 UEC with grade B in 5 subjects; OR
  • Pass Diploma in related field; OR
  • Any other equivalent qualifications recognized by the Malaysian Government

Students with a recognized Diploma in related field will be given advanced standing into the Degree programme.

The management of tourism services is a challenging career in this increasingly leisure-oriented society. Dynamic, creative, and innovative people are needed to plan, organize, and supervise recreation and tourism experiences in a variety of settings, and Anglia Ruskin University’s degree program prepares individuals for positions in areas, as follows:

  • Supervisory/Management positions: usually found in organizations where graduates require continual upgrading of their leadership knowledge base to make strategic business decisions.
  • Independent entrepreneurs: small business opportunities in the tourism and recreation industries.
  • Front line-positions: where most people begin their career, these positions require an understanding of the industry and the ability to anticipate, respond to, and satisfy customer needs.

Examples of specific employment opportunities include:

  • Commercial Recreation and Tourism Enterprises, such as private tour companies, leisure related retail outlets, tourism attractions, health spas, fitness complexes.
  • Adventure Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Park Management, providing nature-based leisure experiences like camping, wilderness experiences, risk recreation, as well as environmental education and managing the resources required for nature-based leisure.
  • Tourism Services, including destination resorts and hotels, theme parks, tourist attractions, convention and meeting business, and special events and festivals.
  • Tour Operations, including packaging, marketing and operation of tours, tour guiding and interpretation services.
  • Sport Management, Public Recreation and Tourism, including parks and recreation departments in municipalities and regional districts, government tourism agencies, community schools, recreation associations, and public recreation facilities.
  • Inclusive Leisure, involving the provision of recreation and tourism services to individuals or groups with special needs in settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centres, mental health and community health centres, etc.
