Limkokwing students participated in the Kuala Lumpur Indie Fashion Week (KLIFW) 2016 at the Blackbox, Publika on May 14.
Five aspiring designers from the Faculty of Fashion & Lifestyle Creativity showcased their creations during the KLIFW 2016, themed “Music VS Fashion”. This event recognises the fight against cancer while providing a networking platform for aspiring entrepreneurs in music and fashion industry in Malaysia.
KLIFW worked with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to show support for survivors through art and fashion. A special runway was held for survivors for the opportunity to wear student-created designs that define empowerment and strength against cancer.
The event highlighted the importance of liberation and support for cancer survivors through empowerment and defiance against cancer through art and fashion.
“We wanted to empower people,” said KLIFW Chief Executive Officer / Founder Alvin Sinclair. “The best way to do it is to get designers from Limkokwing University to design clothes for the survivors.”
Limkokwing University students created customised designs to reflect each survivor’s experience and their triumph against cancer.
“This experience here also helps us to gain more exposure to the industry,” said Diploma in Fashion and Retailing student Ng Ken Leon while adding that the event had taught them how to value of life and appreciate the strength for survivors against cancer.
According to Miss World Malaysia Thanuja Ananthan, TV Host and Animal Rights Advocate, the event provide a crucial platform to ensure that students learn to create bolder designs and gain industry exposure.
“Students need this exposure,” she said. “The Malaysian fashion industry has grown over the last few years and opportunities for young designers are massive.”
Limkokwing University encourages students to participate in showcases and exhibitions to receive industry exposure. Students learn to build networking contacts while gaining industry experience.
