Limkokwing University Botswana’s debate team, the Wings Debate Society, recently participated in the annual Pan African Universities Debating Championships (PAUDC), held in Calabar, Nigeria, from the 29th November until 8th December.

The championship was pioneered in 2009 as a platform for African universities to challenge themselves before participating in the Worlds Universities Debate Championship; the world’s largest debating tournament, and one of the largest annual international student events in the world. PAUDC was also created to assess the potential of African students in addressing issues that not only affect Africa, but the world at large, and to prime them to be able to standout and inspire positive growth and development throughout the continent.

This year’s PAUDC was well attended, with 214 teams from 29 Universities, representing 14 African countries. Limkokwing University sent a team of two; Tumo Mpatane and Gerald T Mzwinila, and one adjudicator; Kutlo Khan.

The team made it to the semi-finals, winning a total of seven rounds, securing themselves a 4th best debating team in Africa title. On the individual rankings, the Limkokwing debaters were ranked 6th and 11th respectively. Khan was also ranked 2nd in the adjudicator’s category. Miss Khan also recently adjudged at the Books Botswana High School Debate Challenge.

The good standing of the team was an encouragement to other Limkokwing debaters, who are soon to start the preparation for the next year tournament.
