An estimated 20.9 million men, women and children are living as victims of human trafficking globally, with more than half of them in Asia Pacific; ProjectLiber8 and Limkokwing University students collaborated to build awareness about the issue on April 14th at Publika.

ProjectLiber8 is a youth-centric non-governmental organisation formed in 2012 aimed at raising awareness on human trafficking. It organises and executes events that cater to current youth trends and issues to effectively disseminate facts and raise awareness.

Limkokwing students from across faculties were tasked to create a video to address various issues about human trafficking. Titled ‘Modern Day Slavery: What the world doesn’t know,’ the video was made up of students from around the world who shared their knowledge on the issue of human trafficking.

Founder of ProjectLiber8, New Su Shern said she hopes the organisation would gain the attachment of the public to act together on the issue.

“This year we would like to take greater heights by empowering hundreds and thousands of youth to take action against human trafficking,” she concluded.

On how students can benefit on taking part in such events, Akash Shrestha, studying Bachelor of Business Administration said, “Human Trafficking is not going away anytime soon so it is important for students to participate in events like these to raise their information level.”

Ali Daoudi, a semester 2 Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing student acknowledged that taking part in events like these enhances students’ career prospects in chorus to shaping their social responsibility.

“The world would be a better place if everybody did their part in raising awareness of such matters,” he concluded.

Previously, Limkokwing University partnered with Mattel on a campaign to curb bullying where over 250 students competed to design the most creative and impactful anti-bullying message in one of four formats; song, video, poster or photograph and T-shirt design.
