Common student concerns

Most personal, relationship or identity problems can be helped through counselling, including adjustment to campus life, stress, anxiety, depression, loss and grief, problems regarding confidence and motivation, abuse issues, family conflicts and relationship difficulties. It could also involve adjusting to a new culture or dealing with dilemmas or difficult decisions, as well as more specific problems such as addictions or eating problems. Some of these problems may be interfering with your studies or life at Limkokwing University. Specific problems relating to studying or work blocks can also be addressed, often in a more structured approach focusing on improving study skills.

Aims of counselling

Counselling offers an opportunity to talk in assurance pertaining problems that concern you. You will gain most benefits if you participate actively, attend sessions on time and by being open and honest with the counsellor. The counsellor can then help you with:

  • Exploring your feelings and thoughts on your current situation
  • Exploring your problems and possible solutions
  • Exploring how you might deal with things differently in the future.

Making an appointment

Appointments are easy to schedule - either by calling the Counselling Unit or by stopping at the unit. If you feel your problem is urgent and need immediate attention, you may need to go directly to the on-campus doctor.

Counselling sessions last for approximately 50 minutes and might be carried out on a weekly basis. You are entitled to use the counselling services as long as you are a student of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.

Confidentiality

Personal information about our students is treated as confidential within the Counselling Unit. We normally do not disclose verbal or written information related to you to others unless we have your permission to do so.

Sometimes counsellors keep notes of ongoing counselling sessions as part of good professional practice. Once counselling is completed, these notes are kept in a locked filing cabinet.

Any decision to disclose confidentiality will usually be discussed with you beforehand. In rare cases, disclosure may occur without your consent if there is a valid reason to believe that you or others are at risk.

Exceptions to the rule of confidentiality occur when:

  • the counsellor has the client's consent to disclose personal information
  • the counsellor believes that the client or a third party is in danger of serious harm
  • disclosure is required by law
