As Asian countries are beginning to emerge as economic superpowers against the backdrop of a global financial crisis, times are swiftly changing and Malaysia finds itself at a crossroad; our country is poised at the brink of prosperity, but in a changing economic landscape that demands more from its citizens than ever before. Malaysia’s march towards a knowledge-driven economy, its drive to spur the development of enterprise and its endeavours to remain as one of the most attractive investment hubs in Asia are but some of the main challenges that our country must face.
At the centre of Malaysia’s challenges is its ability to harness the latent force of its younger generation; the bedrock of a successful civilisation has always been the mobilisation of its youth. Equipping the students with new perspectives and a global outlook will be a step towards that end. It is on this note that the UKEC is confident that the Projek Amanat Negara 2011 will be an excellent platform to advance such an agenda. We believe an open and honest discussion of the many issues that Malaysians face is warranted, and more importantly, timely.
The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Empowering Youth for Tomorrow's Malaysia'. As Malaysia approaches a crucial juncture in its history; it is blessed with a myriad of profitable opportunities as well as beset by a number of difficult challenges. Whether Malaysia falls into what economists are calling the middle income trap and remain a small regional player, or whether it rises to its destiny and joins league of developed and industrialized Asian Tigers such as South Korea and Taiwan, that fate lies within the hands of today’s youth, as the leaders of the future. As young Malaysians, it is incumbent upon us to decide the course of action our nation will take in time to come as an effort to reach the national goals set for 2020, as the youth would one day take the reign of governance.
With this in mind, Projek Amanat Negara 2011 aims to spur intellectual discussion and exchange ideas on our shared ideals and vision for Malaysia; 2020 and beyond.
The wide scope of issues covered by this conference indicates the emphasis on raising awareness of important issues among the bright young minds of Malaysia. With a range of speakers and thought- provoking sessions, we extend a warm invitation to fellow Malaysians to join us in examining various key issues relevant to the governance, development and holistic progress of our country, as well as global issues. Let us all strive in togetherness to become citizens of high intellectual value for the good of our beloved country.
