Limkokwing University Cyberjaya – Maya, a dance competition, illuminated the Limkokwing University Plaza with spectacular sights and sounds on Saturday, 22 August 2009. The event, which was organised completely in-house by Limkokwing’s Indian Cultural Club, was immensely successful.

The dance competition had participants from 8 universities: Limkokwing University, HELP University, Multimedia University, INTI College, KDU College, Masterskill University, Taylor’s College and Sunway University.

Four awards were conferred that night - three top spots and the Most Popular Dance Group award. The first, second and the third spots were given to Masterskill University, MMU Melaka and Help University respectively. Masterskill University also won the Most Popular Dance Group award.

The event which was held to support the 1Malaysia campaign drew staggering crowds of more than 3,000 attendees including distinguished guests, such as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator A. Kohillan Pillay, Goa Movie Director Venkat Prabhu, AF (Akademi Fantasia) Choreographer Linda Jasmine, and I-Passion owner Shaila Nair.

The President of Limkokwing Indian Cultural Club who is also the Director of Maya, Vicram Lachumanan, felt that culture is meant to be shared, not to be owned. “I would love to see unity under humanity, not by races,” said Vicram Lachumanan.

“Maya in Sanskrit means illusion. The concept behind Maya is to dance to reality, to turn an illusion of unity into a hopeful yet concrete realisation.”

Tiffanee Marie Lim, Special Assistant to the President of Limkokwing University, said in her opening speech, “This event is proof that students are able to pull off massive-scale events in a very professional manner. In fact, this competition is one of the most professional events I have ever seen in such a long time.”

During the event, the crowd was dazzled by and danced along to the tunes of artistes such as Dr. Burn, K-town Clan, GoldKartz, Twisted Edge, and Chinese Dance group “V”. K-town Clan debuted their new album, Playground.

As part of the event, there was a car exhibition sponsored by MIMA (Malaysian Indian Motorsports Association) and also a fashion show sponsored by I-Passion.

The fashion show introduced 20 international models, all of whom were also Limkokwing University students. These models were from various countries of the world such as Iran, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Syria, Cambodia and USA, acknowledging that Limkokwing University is a melting pot for 30,000 students from 145 different countries.
