Maya, a dance competition, illuminated the University Plaza with mesmerising sights and sounds last Saturday. The competition was amongst 8 universities including Limkokwing University, HELP University, Multimedia University, INTI college, KDU college, Masterskill University, Taylor’s College and Sunway University.
Four awards were conferred, including three top spots and the Most Popular Dance Group award. The first, second and the third spot were given to Masterskill University, MMU Melaka and Help University respectively. Masterskill University has also won the Most Popular Dance Group award.
The event was to support the 1Malaysia Campaign, and the President of Limkokwing Indian Cultural Club and also the Director of Maya, Vicram Lachumanan felt that culture is meant to be shared, not to be owned.
“I would love to see unity under humanity, not by races,” said Vicram Lachumanan. “Maya in Sanskrit means illusion. The concept behind Maya is to dance to reality, to make an illusion of unity into a hopeful yet concrete realisation.”
The event, organized completely in-house by Limkokwing’s Indian Cultural Club, drew a crowd of more than 3,000 attendees and graced the Limkokwing Plaza and included VIP guests like Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator A. Kohillan Pillay, Goa Movie Director Venkat Prabhu, AF (Akademi Fantasia) Choreographer Linda Jasmine, and I-Passions owner Shaila Nair.
Tiffanee Marie Lim, the Special Assistant to the Tan Sri Lim, said in her opening speech, “This event is a proof that students are able to pull through a massive-scaled event in a very professional manner, In fact, this competition is one of the most professional events I have ever seen in such a long time.”
In the event, the crowd was dazzled and danced along to the tunes of artistes such as Dr. Burn, K-town Clan, GoldKartz, Twisted Edge, and Chinese Dance group “V”. K-town Clan debuted their new album, Playground.
As parts of the event, there were cars exhibition sponsored by MIMA (Malaysian Indian Motorsports Association) and also a fashion show sponsored by I-Passions. The fashion show featured 20 international Limkokwing University students from around the world such as Iran, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Syria, Cambodia and USA.
