Limkokwing Students Sing Satu Malaysia at Graduation
An international group comprising three students from Malaysia and Guinea; Nurul Ernie, Ronnie and Chris, who were joined in chorus by the audience of graduating students wowed the packed audience at the 11 July 2009 Graduation ceremony at Limkokwing University with their rendition of Satu Malaysia; an award-winning song composed by the University.

The song was one of the six entries that won awards in the 1Malaysia song writing contest two days earlier. The contest which attracted 341 entries was organized by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture. The song was composed and written by the Director and Head of the Limkokwing Sound and Music Academy; Mr. Anuar Razak.

Satu Malaysia, meaning 1Malaysia is a Government slogan for national unity purpose. For the international students, the unity of Malaysia is something that they greatly admire. With the launch of this song, the ongoing local campaign under the same name Satu Malaysia has got more attention and awareness.

Dressed in their colourful national costumes, the students sang with gusto, mastering the lyrics in Malay, the national language. The students joined hands in celebration as they received their degrees and sang along to the melodious tunes that were prepared for that evening by the students themselves.

The parents and guardians were not forgotten as Sound and Music Academy students - Ernie, Zazrina, Ronnie, Chris and Maria, among others entertained the audience with singles such as Wings to fly (composed in Limkokwing), Simply the Best and You Raise Me Up. Simply the best and You raise me up are international songs that the students felt sent the right message towards the people who had made a significant change in their lives.

“Singing is my passion,” said Nurul Ernie, a 2008 graduate student of Sound and Music. “It is my morning coffee and my midnight snack. It was a pleasure singing for the graduating students; it takes me back to last year when I also graduated. It was beautiful occasion.”

A few students received awards for outstanding achievements in various fields. The 2009 graduating class was Limkokwing’s biggest with the highest number of high achievers with CGPA of 3.8 and above.

Peace Moite from Uganda, who graduated with a BA (Hons) Business Administration said, “The feeling I got when I walked up those steps to receive that degree was overwhelming, I was filled with joy and proud of my achievement. It was a perfect end to a perfect year.”

Peace and a number of students who had transferred to study in Limkokwing London campus came back to graduate with their friends who remained here in Malaysia. A few of the London Campus graduating students of 2009 that day were Rizky Indrawarman, Sajati Pathak, Shaaf Tauqeer and many more - from the Faculties of Design Innovation, Multimedia Creativity, Communication, Media and Broadcasting, Architecture & The Built Environment, Information Technology and Business Management & Globalization. From a multitude of nations, over 140 students from 35 countries assembled in the Hall of Fame to celebrate their long deserved achievement.

“It was like something came over me and I just had to get up and sing. I saw my friends rise to the occasion as well and it was then that I was sure this feeling wasn’t with me alone. Although I will miss them, it was a blessing to have met them and hopefully one day, we shall meet again,” said a tearful Jema Mahmoud Baruani - from Tanzania, who graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

It was truly a magical and eventful night with lots of tears and smiles as the students departed and took separate roads. Although they all started along the same path, they are all destined for greater things and maybe they will meet again one day. Limkokwing has truly raised and let loose its students to spread their wings.
