Fashion Recycled at Limkokwing University

Limkokwing’s fashion design students proved that with a little creativity it truly is possible to produce creative works of design from what would otherwise be discarded as trash, while carving their own place in the green movement.

The students of Limkokwing incorporated the use of recyclable materials into different works of art, such as sculptures, models as well as chic outfits for the Recycling Campaign organized by the Student Council of Limkokwing together with DBKU, proving that items seen as junk to others could become key materials in the making of recycled art.

Student designers from the 1st semester of the Diploma in Fashion & Apparel Design programme watched on as their models paraded their creations in a fashion show dubbed “Eco Fashion Show”. The garments, fashioned from recycled, organic and indigenous materials such as carrier bags, newspapers and old clothes were an eye-opener to the audience, as they never imagined that these materials could be made into outfits.

The spontaneity of the event also pushed the student designers into completing in three days what would have taken them weeks of research and design process, further highlighting their passion and drive in spreading the recycling message which was to reduce, reuse or recycle.

Their creativity and dedication also earned praises from the DBKU mayor, YBhg. Datuk Bandar Tuan Haji Mohd. Atei bin Abang Medaan, who officiated the event.

“I would like to applaud Limkokwing for taking the initiative to organize this Recycling Campaign, as we work hand-in-hand with each other to promote awareness of the 3R concept to the public through projects such as these,” said the mayor.

The students who participated in the fashion show, both as designers and models, expressed their exhilaration at being able to be part of such a project, as it allowed them to have an understanding as to how a fashion show is organized, as well as partake in an event meaningful to society.

“I had always wanted to know what it felt like to walk on the catwalk, and the experience that I got today gave me the feeling that I was a real model as I was expected to be able to walk confidently in front of a crowd, while modeling an outfit that was designed by our own student designers,” said Siti Zahira, a Mass Communication student.

“I would definitely look forward to participating in more activities such as these, as not only did it give me experience in the fashion world but I was also helping to spread the message on the importance of recycling to everyone present,” she added.

Other highlights of the fashion show also included photography, visual art, interpretive displays and an audio system presentation. The public was also encouraged to interact with the student designers in a form of a quiz game where they were asked to guess the materials that made the garments. Winners of the quiz game were given a complementary drink voucher worth RM10 courtesy of Bing!

The application of creative design in the different aspects of life is part of the education experience that students at Limkokwing are exposed to, allowing them to grow not only as successful members of the industry but also to understand the importance of being in harmony with nature.
