Limkokwing’s Fashion and Retail Design semester 2 students were treated to an educational trip to the Festival Kraf 2010, in order to gain better understanding of Malaysian batik, arts and crafts.

The 19 students along with staff members experienced what Malaysian artists of all crafts had to offer.

The culmination of works by talented artisans showcased a variety of batik designs, wood carvings and other artistic creations. The use of natural resources was evident in the handicrafts displayed at the exhibition which were not only eco-friendly but affordable.

The visit which was organised to allow students to expand their knowledge about batik, were exposed to a variety of designs printed on different fabrics such as cotton and silk. Batik which is a technique for decorating textiles, has developed its own particular aesthetic and design, peculiar to Malaysia.

‘Acquiring this knowledge, students will be able to create their own batik designs allowing them to apply it to their future projects. We feel that this is a great learning experience as it illustrates how creative one can be with batik’, said Fashion and Retail design lecturer Rose.

Fascinated by the different types of designs exhibited at the trade fair, students were exposed to information about the history of batik along with the other artworks on display.

Goli, a Fashion and Retail Design student from China said of the exhibition, ‘I really enjoyed it. By experiencing this I now feel like I’ve experienced what Malaysia has to offer. The artwork and designs define Malaysian people and what they represent.’

Every year, Malaysians from around regions such as Selangor, Sarawak, Pahang just to name a few, come together to produce their merchandise which showcases their talents.

The intricate handmade designs of all crafts were displayed in a total number of seven exhibition halls at the Kompleks Kraf grounds and displayed the fine works which illustrate Malaysian culture.
