Gamodubu children’s center benefits as Limkokwing University donates winter wear

Limkokwing University warmed the hearts and bodies of children in the Gamodubu Village, as the Faculty of Communications, Media and Broadcasting donated boxes full of winter clothes to the Gomodubu Child Care Center on June 12, 2010. The university staff spent the whole day with the children playing games including a soccer match between staff and the youth. This initiative is an effect of the faculty’s concern for continued outreach to foster good relationships with communities that Limkokwing University of Creative Technology gets its students from.

Gamodubu Child Trust Centre houses 139 orphaned, needy and vulnerable children between the ages of 3 and 26, whom are both female and male in and around the Gamodubu areas. The Centre is about 30 kilometers from Gaborone and 30 Kilometers from Molepolole, one of the largest villages in the country.

Addressing the crowd, invited guests and the media: Associate Director and Head of the Faculty of Communications, Media and Broadcasting, Ms. Angela Chasha noted that giving to the underprivileged highlights Limkokwing’s passion to assist communities. “The university receives students from communities like this one and hence the need to continue investing in these social relationships”, she added. She also reiterated that the university’s major objective is not only to reach children such as these, but to touch them and the communities they live in.

Acknowledging the University during the handover ceremony, Director of the Child Care Trust Centre Ms. Shirley Madikwe said she is greatly humbled by the tremendous gesture and that the donations would go a long way to assist in the welfare of the children. Madikwe said, “I am humbled by the gifts, but above all I am more touched because Limkokwing thought of these children at such a cold time, winter. We can never be able to thank this university enough for such a great donation and I believe the clothes given will bring warmth and smiles to these, our children”.

To highlight the significance and appreciation of what the university did for the Gamodubu Child Care Centre, Madikwe took the invited guests, Limkokwing management and the members of the media on a tour of the centre to showcase some of the activities undertaken by the children.

To wrap up the day lecturers engaged in a soccer match with the centre’s youth team, and the youth won the game by three goals to one. The university lecturers also exercised real community giving by buying food and cooking lunch for the occasion and helping with gardening and watering some of the vegetables planted by youth at the centre.
