Limkokwing University of Creative Technology held its second ‘Heal the World’ concert at its Cyberjaya campus yesterday, aimed at helping the survivors of the recent Haiti earthquake that caused unprecedented devastation on the small island nation.

Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Lim Kok Wing, Founder and President of the university was joined at the concert by Thanuja Ananthan, Miss World Malaysia 2009; Yang Berhormat Senator A. Kohilan Pillay, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Choon Bow Bow, Marketing and Fundraising Manager for UNICEF Malaysia, as well as foreign dignitaries from Lesotho, Greece and the Republic of Uganda.

Performances included those from Limkokwing’s rising stars such as Arnez from Zimbabwe, King Lhota from Senegal and Ronnie from Malaysia.

A mock cheque totalling RM30,000 was presented by Senator Kohilan Pillay on behalf of Limkokwing University to Choon Bow Bow at the end of the concert which will be used towards improving the lives of the survivors who are in dire need of food, shelter and medical assistance.

“UNICEF is incredibly humbled and touched by the rush of unconditional generosity displayed by Malaysians after the earthquake struck,” said Choon. “To date, UNICEF Malaysia has managed to raise more than RM500,000 from the Malaysian public.”

Choon also praised the efforts undertaken by members of the university in organizing the event, saying, “Young people from schools, universities, and colleges around Malaysia have also played a vital role in responding to UNICEF’s appeal of donation. UNICEF is heartened that youngsters have stepped forward and responded to our appeal. Tonight is a night of solidarity as we witness countless young people coming together to organize this concert in support of the children in Haiti.

UNICEF is honoured to be in your presence and heartened by the care you’ve shown. You are all champions for children because you have all made a world of difference for the children in Haiti.”

Pillay agreed as much, saying, “I would like to commend Limkokwing University for instilling the values of compassion and love. It will take many months and a few years to rebuild destroyed schools, homes and hospitals. There is much to be done. I’m sure the part played by the Limkokwing University undergraduates will play a big part in the rehabilitation of affected areas.”

Limkokwing University held its first ‘Heal the World’ concert last year that directed attention towards the suffering of Palestinians affected by the war in Gaza.
