
The development of youths in the field of creativity and innovation is a cause that Limkokwing overwhelmingly supports especially the Belia Sarawak programme. This Government of Sarawak initiated project, under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanization, started with the launch of the Belia Logo and Programme Survey which was held at the Limkokwing Borneo Campus earlier this year leading up to the much anticipated ‘Perhimpunan Belia 2010’ held on July 23, 2010.
Also present at the launching of the Perhimpunan Belia 2010 was Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, YB. Datin Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, who represented the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, Dato Sri William Mawan, and Assistant Minister of Youth Affairs and Training, YB Larry Sng. Also present was the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Y.B. Tuan Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof. Limkokwing was represented by International Relations Advisor, Dato’ Hamidah Mohd. Yusoff and Adjunct Professor Datin Haniffah Taib- Alsree.
The Perhimpunan Belia 2010 project aims at engaging the youth of Sarawak to take on a greater role in expressing their thoughts and ideas as well as to become more proactive in participating in the various youth orientated programmes that the Ministry organizes.
Limkokwing’s role at Perhimpunan Belia this year showcased the vibrancy, talent and creativity of youth today and aimed at providing youths the opportunity to excel in the field of design and innovation, as well as to allow them to explore their creativity and talents in the various fields of art.
Limkokwing also played a pivotal role in executing the launch gimmick, the Flash Mob Dance performance, led by Mohd. Syazwan Zainal Abidin, a Diploma in Graphic Design student. This performance saw the participation of over 600 students from 30 different schools in Kuching as they practiced diligently to the video of the dance routine, which was produced by Limkokwing before gathering at the Limkokwing Borneo campus to practice the dance performance.
As a partner of Perhimpunan Belia, Limkokwing was also instrumental in staging a musical entitled ‘Make A Difference’, which is a tribute to the life of the late wife of the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi (Dr.) Hajjah Laila Taib. The musical, which saw the involvement of students from different schools in Kuching, was produced by Limkokwing in collaboration with Perunding Majujaya was especially staged for the launching of the Perhimpunan Belia 2010.
The launch of the Perhimpunan Belia was followed by a Youth Conference, which featured distinguished speakers which included Dr. Jane Lomax-Smith, clinical pathologist and former Australian Minister for mental Health and Substance Abuse, YAM Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatahsa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Gracie Geikie, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality,Tourism and Management, UCSI, Ganesh Kumar Bangah, Owner of Friendster and youngest CEO of a Malaysian public listed company.
Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Lim Kok Wing, founder and President of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology was represented by Dato’ Hamidah Mohd. Yusoff, who spoke on ‘Innovating Education For Youth Today’ at the conference. The speech addresses key points in the development of the education system today, and the importance of instilling creativity and the application of innovative techniques in education today so as to mould students who will be able to answer the call of innovative development for the country.
The Perhimpunan Belia 2010 is just one of many government initiated projects that Limkokwing has participated in, and Limkokwing has pledged its continued support for all the other projects that the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanization has in store for the development of the youth of Sarawak.
