Students and staff of Limkokwing Borneo once again showed their passion for creativity while contributing to society at the inaugural International Green Festival as they highlighted their talents in the different fields of creative arts.
The two-day exhibition, held for the first time at the spanking new Borneo Convention Center Kuching aimed at raising public awareness on nature and environmental conservation, as was seen through the numerous activities organized highlighting the concept that being ‘Green’ can and should be part of daily life.
Another attraction of the event was the evening concert lineup, in which the Limkokwing team dazzled the night with their stunning performances. First there was a fashion show exhibiting Limkokwing student’s creations made from recycled materials. This corresponded with the main objective of the International Green Festival, which was to spread consciousness amongst the public that they too can contribute to the preservation of our world.
The 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse or Recycle) was fully implemented through the fashion collection created from recyclable materials by the Limkokwing student designers and modeled by the Limkokwing and Breeze models. The fashion show was an eye opener to both the models and the student designers as this was a public event.
“I never expected that I could use fashion design as a way of spreading awareness to the public about how important it is to save Mother Earth,” said Limkokwing Fashion Design student, Nur Lyanna binti Wan Yusof.
“This is definitely something that I would want to participate in again, should I be given the opportunity to,” she added.
Limkokwing musical talents, Mayze and United Kids of Oi also captivated the audience with their mesmerizing performances. Performing their own style and genre of music, the two bands together with 12 other local bands put on a brilliant musical extravaganza for the evening.
Mayze continued to get the crowd’s adrenaline running high with a potent display of two of the band’s self-written songs, namely Harapan and Propaganda Minda. Mayze portrayed a precise example of Limkokwing’s multitalented staff with our Mass Communication lecturer, Sufian leading the band on vocals and Salleh, Limkokwing’s Computer Science lecturer on bass guitar. Complementing the band on drums is Ajet and Am on lead guitar.
The hype did not stop there as United Kids of Oi took on the stage to showcase a creative fusion of punk rock and ska. The masses were up on their feet upon hearing the familiar tunes of Bob Marley’s epic number, “No Woman No Cry”, in true Oi style. Kojack, also a Limkokwing first year Mass Communication student led the band on vocals and rhythm guitar. Adding beats and harmony to the band was David on drums, Roger on lead guitar and Saypul handling bass guitar.
“It is really important for both staff and students to get involved in events such as these, in which we come together creating awareness to the public about our environment and its preservation,” said Mohd. Sufian.
“Through musical performances and the fashion show, the audience as well as the performers did not lose out on having fun at the event and at the same time, we actually shared the same optimism and anticipation of a healthier and cleaner world,” said Mohd. Salleh.
He hopes to see more events such as these because everyone, be it parents, students or teenagers, should be more aware of the environment and its issues surrounding it. He believes that events such as these are a good way to deliver this message to them, as these events become learning platforms that are informative, fun, interactive and vibrant.
