Sound Circus, an R & B group, whose members are students of Limkokwing Borneo won the Silver Award for Best Hip Hop song entitled Jamalo at the VIMA Awards held in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Their win comes closely after the launching their debut album entitled “Something About You” a couple of months earlier.
The album, with 8 tracks contains conscious and witty lyrics and original flow. It is well produced and goes all over the place with an R & B-Hip Hop base with a bit of pop, funk and rock, with the backbone of a hip-hop beat and turning all tracks into something special.
The title track is infectious with a funky bass line that under lays a classic “souls 2 soul” string section found in many contemporary ‘RnB’ tracks, topped off with a smooth vocal line makes it very ‘moreish’.
Another track, which encapsulates a club dance style, is Jamalo, with elements of ‘techno’ & ‘rock’ blended with smooth rap lines & a memorable chorus ‘hook’ this song is a real party favourite.
The fact that the album is not genre-restricted makes it possible to appeal to anyone and with the addition of combining more than one genre of music on a single track is what sets this album apart.
Members of Sound Circus include Ammy P, Gamerholic and Crystal G who are from Nigeria and undertaking the Anglia Ruskin Degree programme in Computer Science at the Kuching Campus.
“It was a collective decision to brave ahead with an album,” says Ammy P. “It all started with little microphones for recording, then laptops to provide sounds. After which the first demo track “Run This Show” was produced and everyone discovered their roles.”
“We decided to launch our album in Kuching because we want to capture the local community and also Kuching has a powerful audience,” he adds. “The reaction to the music and project has been overwhelmingly positive from folks all around the world – from Malaysia to Nigeria. It’s truly amazing to see people from back home wanting to listen to and appreciate the music that we are making.”
The album is produced by Christopher Servey, a sound engineer and a good friend from the UK who decided to base his recording studio, Rok-Box Music Studio in Kuching.
The album cover was designed by the Limkokwing Graphic Design team.
Sound Circus has also garnered several nominations for the upcoming African Entertainment Awards which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on March 27. They are nominated five categories, Best Hip Hop, Best R & B, Best Raggae/Dance Hall, Best Group and Best Dance Performance. To vote please go to www.africanentawards.com
