Limkokwing student’s design selected for Miri International Jazz Festival (MIJF)

Limkokwing Borneo’s students have once again designed the official t-shirts for the upcoming Miri International Jazz Festival (MIJF).

This industry-within-the-university (Indusity) project marks another successful collaboration between Limkokwing Borneo and the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), as the designs created by Siaw Quan Cheng were also chosen as the official designs for the MIJF t-shirts last year.

Heading the team of students at Limkokwing are Petrus Alfred Paul, a Graphic Design lecturer and Emmanuel Osakue, pathway leader for Anglia Ruskin’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Limkokwing Borneo.

‘This collaboration with STB is a great opportunity for our students to participate in our various Indusity projects as we believe that our students need to be able to meet with the demands of the industry,’ said Petrus.

‘Knowledge and talent alone is not enough in today’s world; it is the ability to apply these skills effectively that can allow one to excel in the industry. We at Limkokwing Borneo have always emphasized the importance of this to our students, and have always tried to expose them to as many industry related projects as possible,’ he added.

The students worked hard at creating designs that were vibrant and dynamic, and could best represent the festival as well as the essence of jazz.

‘I wanted to portray the fun, exciting and vibrant elements of the jazz festival as much as I could, and decided to focus on designs that were simple but symbolic of the essence of jazz,’ said Siaw, who is currently pursuing his second year degree programme in Graphic Design.

For his numerous contributions to Limkokwing, has also been awarded a full scholarship by the President/Founder of Limkokwing, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Lim Kok Wing.

Siaw’s design represents the entire festival as a celebration of music and the wonderful laid-back environment where the festival is held. “The designs were also created with the intention of expressing the interactivity that the music fest employs, the close interaction between musicians and their the audience,” he explained.

Siaw, who was also part of this Indusity project last year, stated that he has gained a lot of valuable learning experience from the numerous Indusity projects that he has participated in. This in turn has allowed him to understand the needs of the market and the exposure has helped him to further develop the application of his skills and knowledge.

‘As a creative institute, we are always getting involved in such ‘Indusity’ programmes and the industry-oriented environment at our campus proves to be a winning formula. This ultimately benefits the students before they graduate,’ said Limkokwing Borneo Director of Corporate Development Nikki Lugun.

“It is our Founder/President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Lim Kok Wing’s vision of empowering a new generation of global graduates by harnessing the energy and unlocking their hidden creativity,” she explained.

Miri will once again come alive with jazzy tunes on May 14 and 15 as it presents another exciting edition.
