Mass Communications students from Limkokwing undertook a study visit to Cats Fm to gain more knowledge on the broadcasting industry. The students were accompanied by Senior Manager Nikki Lugun and Programme Coordinator for the Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting, Mohd Sufian Mohidin.
They were met on arrival by Cats FM radio presenters, Azrani Azmin, also known as DJ Zack and Tracy Beatrice who took the staff and students on an informative tour around the studio.
These inspiring DJ’s who hosts numerous daily prime programs shared their experience and had an interesting Q&A session with students. Not only did the students learn what these DJ’s do for a career and prospects of the job, students also recorded greetings for the upcoming festive celebrations as well as promos. This was a first time experience shared by all students.
The Programme room was also one of the departments introduced to the students which is where scripts are written and programs are created.
The students enjoyed the opportunity of being in a real industry environment when they had the opportunity to record greetings for the upcoming festive celebration. Students who were proficient in Mandarin had the opportunity to record a Mandarin promotional message as well.
The students were later taken into the Main Studio where they informed that it was the largest broadcasting studio in Kuching. Coincidentally, the host of the show Rentak Ruai, DJ Emma who was on air invited the students to shout out an impromptu hearty greeting to the listeners.
For all of the students, this was their first time debuting on air. They also had the chance to see the Programme Room, where scripts are written and programmes are created.
“This visit to Cats fm has opened up my eyes to the diverse areas of mass communications which includes broadcasting,” said Sherry Deborah Israel who is currently a semester two student. “Since I’ve joined Limkokwing, I’ve participated in many events such as the HIV/AIDS awareness exhibition, attended a media forum where I had the chance to rub shoulders with many esteemed journalists and even took part in an event management and participated in fashion shows where I gained more self-confidence.”
For Deborah, being at Limkokwing has opened her eyes to the tremendous opportunities available in the Mass Communications industry. “I feel so fortunate to be taking up this course,” she added.
“The visit to Cats FM is to expose mass communications students to how the radio broadcasting industry operates,” explained Mohd Sufian. “At the same time, with this gained knowledge and experience, students will be more prepared to take on the media world.”
