Limkokwing treat to orphanages

15 May 2009 - Students of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Cyberjaya in collaboration with CyberCare Malaysia (a non-governmental organization) organised an E-workshop for two orphanages during a visit to their home. This effort is part of Public Relations students’ project under the Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting.

The project involved introducing the children from two orphanage houses, Rumah Impian and Rumah Shalom, both in the Klang Valley, the basic knowledge of accessing the internet and to help the orphanages keep abreast in this global community.  The project also aims to help the children create, maintain and foster connection in a digital community through e-mail and social media connections.

“We really hope to bridge the digital divide among the underprivileged children paralleling the boom of digital information technology from our project”, said Arif one of the participating students.

Zhou Meng, an undergraduate from China believes this project has brought him to pilot practical experiences through a real-life project and enhance a social responsibility endeavor.

“It’s always very fulfilling to me especially, when we are given to chance to give back to the community, especially underprivileged children. It really brings out the best in me,” said the Chinese national.

The out-reach project also managed to engage a bond between the students and the orphanages, hoping to fashion a cyberspace relationship between the students and the orphanages.

Mitchell Leong, Senior Manager of the faculty said that under the innovative concept of embedding the industry within the confines of a university, a concept called, ‘Indusity’, students are given the opportunities to work on to projects commissioned from the industries.

He added the project is set to cultivate student social sensibility, responsibility and collectiveness as a standing of global graduates.
