
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) launched it Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign in Gamodubu by donating 4 boxes of winter clothing to the Gamodubu Child Care Trust Centre on the 12th of June 2010.
Gamodubu Child Trust Centre is a centre that caters for 139 orphaned and vulnerable children between the ages of 3 to 26 in the Gamodubu area. The Centre as the Gamodubu Child Care Trust is popularly known as is located 30 kilometers from Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana and 30 kilometers from Molepolole which is one of the largest villages in the country. It is an area characterised by a high number of orphaned and vulnerable children and there is only one primary school in the area.
The LUCT Corporate Social Responsibility was mooted by the Faculty of Communications, Media and Broadcasting during the month of April 2010 on how to help and serve the community better. The donation of the clothing marked the faculty’s first community initiative.
Ms Angela Chasha Limkokwing University Associate Director and Head of Faculty for Communication, Media and Broadcasting graced the event and said that by giving to the needy was one of the university’s aim to assist communities. “The university draws its students from all corners of the society in Botswana and hence the need to create an everlasting relationship that fosters a good rapport between the university and the communities from which it draws the majority of its students,” she added. She also went on further to say that the Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign was meant to assist the neediest and most disadvantaged in society.
Speaking at the handover ceremony Shirley Madikwe, the Director of the Gamodubu Child Care Trust Centre said that she was very humble by the donation and that it would go a long way in assisting the children at the Centre. “I am so humbled by the donation but above all I am more humbled by the fact that you thought of these children at this particular time (the winter period)” “We can never be able to thank Limkokwing University enough for this kind of donation and it will go a long way in bringing warmth and smiles to these children,” she added.
The director of the Centre took the visitors around the place showing them the various activities that are undertaken there and in once again an act of goodwill the lecturers exchanged their pens and markers by embarking on a watering exercise of the vegetable seed beds.
On a lighter hearted moment the lecturers put aside their pens and papers for some football boots and a played soccer game with the youth and they lost the game by three goals to one. The game brought about wild cheers from the sizeable crowd each time Angela and Shirley touched the ball. Besides the donation of clothes to the Centre the lecturers also provided food worth one thousand pula (1000 pula) for lunch on that day.
