The United Nations has estimated that some 20 million people have been affected by the torrential rains and flooding that has left more than 1,700 dead in Pakistan. Relief efforts have begun and nations across the world are sending much needed medical supplies and food items to the region.
Raging flood waters have spread from the northwest to the Punjab agricultural heartland down to the southern province of Sindh with the U.N deeming this the most devastating natural disaster in history. The most vulnerable victims are women, the elderly and children as collapsing villages drown thousands while millions more are threatened by the aftermath of waterborne diseases.
In a bid to help those affected by the floods, Limkokwing University students have taken their usual stand in helping those in need through the University’s Heal the World foundation.
Perhaps one of the few of its kind, Heal the World is a peace initiative created to raise awareness, inspire hope and give a sense of passion for equality amongst the youth. It is not the first time Limkokwing University is holding such charitable and noble events to help the neediest. With students from 150 countries, and an international population of 30,000, it is powerful that such a community galvanise with the message and efforts which has gained the attention of UNICEF who have adopted it as an official movement worldwide.
Last year, the University hosted an exhibition and concert entitled ‘The Plight of the Palestinians’ gathering almost 8,000 supporters, and another for the reconstruction of Haiti in February this year.
Held over two days, the event will consist of a bazaar selling exquisite Pakistani crafts and delicacies which will be sold at the University’s Plaza on the 29th and 30th of September, with the much anticipated concert taking place on the 30th of September with performances of all types of languages across all genres of music.
“The showing of love is really great and it motivates us to do more for the less fortunate and we are so grateful to our campus and peers for this humble gesture to my country. I am sure we would have not received such generosity at another institution,” said Zunaira Erum, a Business student from Pakistan.
Graduate and now Associate Vice President of Creativity and Innovation, Tiffanee Marie Lim said at the event for the Plight of the Palestinians, “To build peace is not simply the absence of war, it is to build a fair, human world. No war must not mean no food, no education and no healthcare”
“This University is in a position where we can do something. Here are 9,000 students from 145 countries working and learning together with no trace of hate in their hearts. We hope our efforts will touch the hearts of those in pain, they must know that there are people with them, and for them.”
Echoing the sentiment, Slovakian student Diana Petrechova, and member of the organising committee shares the ideal: “The purpose of this peace initiative is to bring about a positive change, give hope to those affected and show them we care. Doing these simple things, the student body of Limkokwing University will forever touch many lives and inspire the world to show compassion.”
The charity concert tickets are on sale for RM15 with all proceeds going towards purchasing medical supplies for the victims. Those who are moved by the plight of the displaced and want to help can do so by donating to Limkokwing University’s Heal the World Foundation by contacting the University online or by calling 03 – 83178888.
