
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has done it again, when its multi-national or multi-country team won the first Astro Nextgen Contentpreneur award, with its entry “Lock”.
The event was organised by the Astro All Asia Plc.
The Team led by director Reuben Kang from Malaysia, comprised students from United Kingdom, Indonesia and Kenya.
The whole project took about a month to be completed including coming-up with a script, about three days of shooting and the rest for editing.
Lock won the “Extraordinary Short Content” category and it was also nominated in Phenomenal Art Direction category.
Winners walked away with a RM10,000 cash, trophy and a certificate.
The NextGen contentpreneur award is the first of its kind award targeted at tertiary students and its main objective is to encourage youths in the pursuit of content excellence, in various categories such as shot film, documentary, music video, website and animation.
Entries were judged by a panel of judges that included Maestro Talent Management Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Freddie Fernandez, editor Akashdeep Singh, film-maker and director of Reel Networks Sdn Bhd, David Moggie, general manager of Youth Dynamics Astro, Hunsa Thanomsing and co-founder and creative director of WASP Studios Sdn Bhd, Paul Morrison.
The award is presented by Astro in collaboration with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission, and Multimedia Super-Corridor Malaysia.
Lock focused on the human characteristics of good and evil.

Set in Putrajaya, the story focuses on an obnoxioius British businessman by the name of John Smith who loses his car outside his office.
Following this episode, the film spins towards other characters including Boy (the person who stole the car), Janice Lee (an insurance agent dealing with Mr Smith’s claim) and Boss (who runs the auto-theft syndicate).
First time director Reuben Kang, was surprised but elated to see his last project as a student at the Limkokwing University has grabbed the top award in the “Extraordinary Short Content”.
Kang, who besides being a director wrote the script.
After it was reviewed by his lecturers Mitchell Liong and Faizul Mohd Noh, he started on production and shooting. He teamed up with Gitungo James Waiganjo from Kenya as soundman and Indonesian, Taufan Ericsson to shoot the film, while the casts included students from Malaysia, Britain and China.
“It is a worthwhile passion to submit this entry, and to win it is truly amazing,” Kang said. “Previously, I was only involved in projects to finish my assignments but with this final project, you learn a whole lot more as I was involved from the start from script writing and towards shooting the film.
“Winning this award and getting it for the Limkokwing University was truly a bonus,” he added.
Waiganjo, from Kenya said it was a good learning experiences as we worked well together in completing the project.
He said it was a food exposure as they applied practically what they learnt theoretically from classes.
