Ambitious graduates incorporates creativity in new fashion
The challenge of using an icon from across the world as the basis and interpretation of your design was done by 21 final-year students from the Fashion and Retail Design Faculty of the Limkokwing University. Their creations were inspired by icons and sheer imagination.
What is certain is that the three-year experience they gained at the university has opened their minds for them to be prepared to begin a long journey and thus create a name for themselves in the fashion world.
Under the show’s theme, Magic, the graduates displayed their collections at a fashion show held at The Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, recently. The participants presented three collections—two normal wear and one avant-garde. Limkokwing students from three countries also exhibited collections from London, Botswana and Malaysia.
Jee Pang Xinyu applied creativity and used normal materials for her outfits. She used professional carver Alex Cadler as her icon. Artist Cadler is known for adding new dimensions to his futuristic designs. Jee’s idea was to redesign a wearer with a new cutting and the use of materials like leather and colours such as silver, white and black.
Another student, Sian May Ling, also made a good impact when she produced a collection that was inspired by origami. She incorporated the art into her designs and created a new texture in the fabrics used. Despite the influence of traditional art, her designs were fairly trendy and futuristic.
Chong Lin Lin unveiled her Kaleidoscope creations. The Greek word means “the birth of beauty in view.” She played with bright colours of red, orange, yellow, and white in her outfits.
Also out to make an impression was Lucy Catherine Ashley Atkinson. She experimented with a new colour technique and chose to use round folds as the main attraction. The result was a unique splash of colour.
Mohd Afiq Roslan was impressed with Victoria Beckham’s striking glamour style. Apart from accessories, he turned to fabulous cuts in his own interpretation.
Although the overall designs presented were not extraordinary, the student designers should be applauded for their daring and creativity to incorporate new elements. They also made a difference by the clever use of selected fabrics.
The show was a good exercise for the graduates to make a mark on the fashion world in their own right.
