On the 13th November 2009, the Mobilefest London presented by FILMOBILE and the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology took place in London. During the event a live-web broadcast with the Mobilefest in San Paulo connected two industry panels. Five industry experts in London and San Paulo discussed the new trends and directions in the field of mobile media.
The London panel featured an international selection of leading practioners in the new emerging field of mobile media, Chris Fry (UK), a locative media artist, Gaby David (France), a new media researcher from Paris, Dr. Thomas Mayer (Germany), a film scholar from Germany, Daniel Florencio (Brazil), a London based filmmaker and Camille Baker (Canada) a London based mobile artist. On the Brazilian side in San Paulo, Anotni Abad, Caroline Bernard, Greg Giannis, Kasia Molga, Martha Gabriel and Rachel Jacobs were contributing to the dialogue about innovation through mobile media.
During the panel discussion the themes of collaborative projects and the relationship between ownership, authorship and participation were discussed. The role of the filmmaker and artists to work with mobile media can be seen as initiator to empower people. The international link emphasised the different realities that people live in. Furthermore mobile media can assist social engagement and opens up new possibilities. Artists and creatives can take a leading position in enabling social transformation. The creative realising the potential of mobile media can initiate new trends.
At the moment new technological trends are entering the public sphere, but an analysis of the discourse that shapes these technologies will need to be examined carefully. Mobile media has been underrated in the last years, which allows vast potential for the next generation of entrepreneurs. The Limkokwing University of Creative Technology is educating the next generation of leaders who need to gain an understanding of the transforming media landscape.
The Limkokwing MCC, mobile creative centre, is an initative to lead the mobile innovation process. Limkokwing MCC is the interface between the new emerging mobile industry and the Limkokwing University Network.
Mobile filmmaking workshop in collaboration with Temple University Tokyo The mobile filmmaking workshop at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology ran in collaboration with the Temple University in Japan in October. Students learned to use new media technology to get in contact with their fellow students in Japan.
Max Schleser, a lecturer and mobile filmmaker at the Limkokwing University, gave a lecture on the subject of mobile filmmaking. The project ran over three weeks as part of the interfaculty Universal Project. Students from all backgrounds engaged in the exercise of creativity. Students in London and Tokyo were introduced to each other via live-web broadcast. They discussed their ideas in a live-chat and then used web 2.0 technologies to collaborate online. The ideas for the short documentary style film projects focused on the stories that emerged out of the global cities Tokyo and London. Students were encouraged to work in a creative and abstract form exploring the creative prospects of mobile devices fusing the cityscapes of Tokyo and London to one project.
Within only two weeks students learned the basics of filmmaking on mobile devices and edited their projects online collaboratively.
The work will be showcased at the Design Fiesta in Tokyo and at the end of term show at the Limkokwing University in London in December.
