Limkokwing University was exclusively invited as the sole private academic institution to participate in an exhibition by the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW).

The NIEW felt that the University, with its affiliate network, is the perfect medium to reach for a broader audience.

The University set up two booths, with the larger one capturing the various roles of women in panels of pictures and texts.

The Limkokwing international choir, performed Heal the World and Satu Malaysia, to entertain the attendees.

The event was officiated by Dato’ Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Malaysia.

“On behalf of the Ministry and NIEW, I would like to say thanks to Limkokwing University,” said Dato’ Seri Shahrizat.

“I find both the lecturers and the students are very positive, creative, and willing to embrace all forms of education and people who are different from you,” added Dato’ Seri Shahrizat about the diversities of cultures and nationalities that are present in the University.

Speaking during the launch, the Minister said that the exhibition will play a part for the empowerment of women, especially in NAM countries.

“I noted with great relief and satisfaction to see countries hitherto have not known for actively promoting the empowerment of women, in the last three years, I am truly happy to see not only the presence of women in very senior decision making positions in their cabinet, they are doing even better.”

The University boasts more than 30,000 students from 150 countries worldwide of which 63 countries are members of NAM.

The exhibition, called the Women of NAM: a Thousand Faces, aspires to heighten the roles of women worldwide and reflects the diversities of challenges faced by women in the respective NAM countries.

The event, held at Mid Valley Mall, Kuala Lumpur from 23 – 25 October 2009, sees 6 participating countries such as Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Uzbekistan, South Africa, and Malaysia; as well as 27 participating agencies, including the university
