Gateway to 21st century education incorporating the best of both worlds

Limkokwing University made its blazing debut in 1992 setting new trends and transforming the conduct of private education in Malaysia. Never before was there a concerted effort to provide education that would build capability of local talent in creative technology. The effort was pioneering and Tan Sri Dato’ Professor Dr Lim Kok Wing, the founder and president of Limkokwing University started from scratch to build market confidence in creative careers. He invested heavily in marketing and promotions sparing no expense in educating parents regarding the importance of creativity. This was to pay off in dividends as student population increased by leaps and bounds.

The university’s focus on creative technology in 1992 was uncannily timely because the need for content creation exploded in the 1990s when technology advancement such as the Internet transformed business-to-business transactions. Limkokwing’s techno-savvy and creative graduates were a godsend to businesses that were trying to cope with the changes. For school leavers the university’s curriculum and global university network made it the perfect choice to obtain qualifications to gain entry into exciting careers such as web design, animation and product design amongst other creative careers.

The university dramatically changed the pace of private education. Its premises painted with bright colours and designs were a far cry from the dull traditional look of formal education. Its advertising was exciting and young reaching out successfully to a new generation eager to check out new career choices.

The 1997 the university began to export its services. Its international marketing was excellently strategised and crafted that today it is among the most well-known brandnames for educational excellence. Today it has more than 4,000 students from over 60 countries are pursuing international degrees and diplomas. In 2003 the university was awarded by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for excellence in export services and by the Ministry of Education for being the most international private university in the country.

In 2003 within a span of just 12 years the university became the first private university in the country bestowing its own degrees. In 2004 it moved into its own RM100-million premises in Cyberjaya, a landmark campus with its innovatively outstanding design.

The revolutionary concept of “industry within university” to boost brand development activities of the university was made possible through the incorporation of the Malaysian Design & Innovation Centre. Incubation of new lifestyle brands, operated like business outlets were carried out on campus – a trendy cafe, a fashion outlet, a hair design lab, an al-fresco eatery and a convenience outlet are some of them. Here students are encouraged to create the identity, develop the interior and market the products.

Through MDI the university has a direct role in nurturing innovation through R&D activities in brand packaging to help SMEs. The creation of the National Award For Creativity & Innovation recognised pioneering branding efforts of more than 50 companies in Malaysia. The university has initiated several mergers related to joint efforts with British and Italian companies to upgrade knowledge and skills.

The Limkokwing University provides Tan Sri Dato’ Professor Dr Lim with the best training ground to produce the kind of human capital he believes is best to power commercial enterprises. These are highly skilled, highly creative individuals who bring fresh perspectives that enterprises need to meet global challenges.

The university is unlike other institutions. Here students are expected to think outside the box. Limkokwing students are noted for their achievements and their skills; for their positive attitude and sunny personality. They have an edge over their peers with their creativity and versatility. And they are encouraged to be competitive – to put the knowledge and skills they have gained to test at competitions, exhibitions and other events. The most promising students are absorbed into the many departments that now provide consultancy for brand development to both the private sector companies as well as government agencies.

The learning process at Limkokwing involves students in major activities and campaigns that the consultancy works on. Many of these activities are focused on global issues. The Kuala Lumpur World Peace Conference held at Mandarin Oriental in August, 2003 is a fine example when students helped in the organization of the event. It is Tan Sri Lim’s belief that given the opportunity people will shine.

The most recent development has been the university’s expansion into 54 cities in 42 countries as part of its globalization strategy to create the next generation of the world content creators. In the pipeline is the setting up of Limkokwing campuses in key cities such as London to serve the European region, Gaboronne in Botswana to serve the African continent and Beijing to serve the big Chinese market.

What the Limkokwing University has achieved is in building global respect for the quality of Malaysian education. The fact that Limkokwing degrees are now delivered in London by a British institution of higher learning is testimony to this. The university with its latest achievements now spearheads the Malaysian government’s aspiration to make the country a hub for educational excellence.
