Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing is not only mulling the idea of Malaysia as a potential regional hub for packaging and printing; he is already lending a hand to the government to make it happen.
The Limkokwing group is all set to forge a tripartite collaboration comprising the group, the government and the manufacturers of packaging materials and suppliers.
“We have the capacity to become a packaging hub, and we hope to work with printers to help us achieve this vision,” he says. According to him, the world packaging market stood at RM1.5 trillion last year.
“We just need to capture 10% of that and it would be as good as printing money,” he quips.
Limkokwing will be introducing short training courses for small and medium enterprises. A one-day training session on the fundamentals of branding and packaging, including a tour of the Limkokwing-Malaysia Design Innovation Centre in Cyberjaya, has been finalised.
“We have discussed some other plans which would be implemented in the later stage,” he says.
Lim says Malaysia should be able to take a bold step and become a packaging hub. “We already have the design capability, which is among the best in the region,” he adds.
“We are able to communicate in all the world’s main languages and have extremely efficient support services such as colour separation and high-tech printing machinery. Most importantly we have the experience that goes back a long way. Unilever has been here for a long time. We have been doing packaging for international brands but have not been applying it for a lot of our local products,” he points out.
He says Malaysia actually can produce packaging for the world’s top companies, thanks to the supply of good designers locally.
