He was born a year after World War II ended; a time when the world was in the process of rebuilding, a time of healing. This environment was to have a lasting effect that became clearly visible in his work in later years.
Born of humble parentage, his artistic ability was evident from a young age; the flow of lines, the mix of colours, the different shapes, the perspectives. He was fascinated with all these, especially with the resulting harmony. He clung to this passion, religiously refusing to bow down to parental admonitions to pursue more lucrative, more practical career pathways.
He dropped out of school as a teenager and for two years his parents never knew. He had more fun earning a living, finding out about life. He was impatient to get into the groove of things. He became a reporter, quickly growing impatient with the straightforward style of factual writing. He then tried his hand at being a cartoonist, publishing Guli Guli, a tongue-in-cheek strip punctuated with typical Malaysian humour. Even that was not enough to whet his creative appetite.
Then came the opportunity in advertising. Here he found his calling. Advertising gave him the space to hone his many skills and fulfill his creative urge. It opened a new chapter that completely turned his life around.
