About Creativity

The President of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato' Dr Lim Kok Wing, often inspires his students with words of wisdom. Even alumni remember the many pieces of advice given.

Over the years, the mentor and educationist extraordinaire has imparted not only creative skills but also uplifting words to his students from more than 90 countries. These words still echo in the recesses of their minds, words such as:

  • Creativity is not about stringing together a few clever words or putting together visuals that are arresting. The message is important and it must be delivered cleverly to the audience.
  • Creativity is not inborn. It is found in you and others. You can practise and excel in it once you have developed the skill. But before you do, you have to break free from traditional barriers. Yes, you have to unlearn.
  • Creativity is about finding solutions. Nothing more, nothing less. You are faced with a situation of putting across a message. You are faced with the difficulty of overcoming a problem – the problem of a product not being accepted. You are faced with a situation in which a product is wrongly perceived by the audience. Whatever the situation, what is required of you as a creative person is a solution.
  • Reasoning is critical when discussing creativity because you have to persuade others to your point of view. It takes a lot of calculation and re-calculation.
  • Being creative does not mean being abnormally clever, way-out or outrageous. Creative work is not a flash of genius but an exercise in problem solving.
  • Creativity for creativity’s sake can be a waste of time and opportunity. It only becomes a powerful tool when it’s linked to a specific end-result.
  • It is not possible to be creative simply by hanging back and following the lead of others. To be creative requires a belief that one is as good as other people with the potential to be much better.
  • Creativity applies not only to design but also to everything around you.
  • Don’t just develop skills like ordinary lecturers. You must think. Think creatively and critically.
  • Creativity is my tool at work. We celebrate creativity seriously. We recognize those who work to break new ground, create change. Those who do are generously rewarded. We are a catalytic agent of change ourselves.
  • I sleep very little. I sleep way after midnight and wake up before the Muslims’ prayer time. I think when you get into a creative circle, you don’t stop. The world doesn’t stop on a Sunday and start again on a Monday.
  • We have to get all Malaysian companies to believe that innovation is the very ingredient that will drive productivity and quality; that it will help them to, upgrade their company expand their business, increase their profitability and build markets all over the world. If the commitment is there, so will be the focus. And success will follow.
  • We need people who think outside the box, people who are prepared to challenge the norm and change the rules if the rules have become stumbling blocks.
  • Today, it’s all about the power of thinking, the power of creativity. Last decade was all about technology. Innovative thinking has no boundaries, and it respects no borders.
