Malaysia Institute of Directors Corporate Directors’ Banquet

1 December 2005

Address by Tan Sri Dato’ Professor Dr Lim Kok Wing

President, Malaysia Institute of Directors

Conferment of Honorary Fellowship on the

Prime Minister of Malaysia in conjunction

with the Corporate Directors’ Banquet

Let me begin by thanking our guest of honour, our Prime Minister for honouring us by being with us tonight. We know how busy he must be, we just don’t know how he is able to keep so calm and collected and constantly smiling and be in so many places on the same day.

The Prime Minister was spotted in Kelantan just a couple of hours ago.

Away from politics, the Prime Minister can rest assured that Corporate Malaysia is fully behind him and will work in tandem with every step that he takes as he moves the country forward.

In the two years that he has been Prime Minister, we have learnt to look at the country through his eyes and we have learnt new lessons.

Dato Seri, we are beginning to see what you see. And, as you do, we see a vision that will lift this nation to new levels of excellence.

We are in full agreement with your priorities. The country cannot go wrong with a foundation that is built on the values of integrity, honesty and accountability.

Values that you hold close to your heart. Values that you wish to see instilled in all Malaysians. Values that will strengthen the resilience of this nation as we face new challenges bought on by globalisation.

Today we are gathered together to honour our Prime Minister.

We know him to be a leader who leads by example, one who leads by consensus; one who persuades rather than dictates.

All of us here will agree that consensus is, perhaps, the most difficult method of leadership because consensus is about empowering people. It requires mutual collaboration and cooperation to achieve outcomes that will be to everyone’s satisfaction. Consensus is desirable because consensus enables collective ownership of the results.

Consensus building has been the Prime Minister’s approach for over 30 years that he has served with the Government and the Cabinet in various capacities.

He knows it well. He uses it well.

The Prime Minister is a deeply religious man so it is not surprising that good principles and good values occupy centre stage in his governance.

He sees the strengthening of the moral fibre of our people as the key to moving forward as a nation. He sees it as the foundation that will help us achieve the objectives and aspirations of being a fully developed nation.

He is pushing hard for Corporate Malaysia to be instilled with the qualities of integrity, dependability and accountability – values that will brand Malaysia as an exemplary country.

With his warm personality and quiet leadership he has already built a climate of goodwill for Malaysia around the world.

He stand today as the most credible Muslim leader capable of bridging the rift that has pided the world.

Dato’ Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi holds this nation close to his heart. He wants very much to improve the quality of life for all, especially of those living in the rural heartland.

He promotes the spirit of innovation so people will rethink their traditional ways of making a living and explore new avenues for wealth creation.

The Prime Minister has identified biotechnology as the new engine of growth for Malaysians. He is taking steps to empower our rural economy with new knowledge and new technology so they may participate and progress in the new economy.

The Prime Minister is a man of gentle demeanour, able to reach out and touch the hearts of millions.

A man who secured for Barisan Nasional its biggest landslide win since 1978.

A man who prefers the soft approach, a leader who commands loyalty without effort.

He believes empowerment is no less important than enforcement.

In corporate governance he seeks greater integrity, greater transparency, greater accountability.

In civil service he seeks greater dedication, greater commitment, greater responsibility.

In citizenry he seeks greater cohesion, greater collaboration, greater integration.

He knows that success in achieving all of this will brand the country in a way that will build its global competitiveness and reputation.
